Here ya go. All the Central NJ CraigsList ads for sewing machines. There's a LOT of them!
http://cnj.craigslist.org/search/?ar...ine&catAbb=sss |
Where do you live? Maybe another member knows of a good repairman in your area. If you are anywhere near Tulsa, Ok I have one I would highly recommend. Just a thought.
|
I have to do that with a throw and matching pillow. I've had the top done for a long time, then I got sick and haven't got a chance to get back to it. Now I'm in the middle of Christmas baking and I host Christmas dinner for the family. No way will I get it done. It's for my cousin's son and his bride from Japan. She's having a get-together for them. I've decided I'm not going to stress over it. If I don't get it done, I'll take a picture of the top and mail it to them when it's done. They live in CA now.
|
Have you thought of maybe calling local quilt shops to see if they have "free sewing" times you can be there to finish them? Ours does and let you use their machines too. It's worth a try.
|
I once gave someone an afghan I was knitting for them. I did not finish it in time BUT I wrapped it up anyway, needles still attached, and they loved it!
Took me another 3 weeks to finish the thing but they had it forever and still loved the idea that it was a work in progress when I gave it to them. Diane |
How about checking with a fellow quilting friend and ask to borrow her machine till yours is fixed!???? our guild is so kind here to do such a thing!!!and maybe your LS has a sewing room you can go to????.... just thinking out loud.....:)

It's rewarding at this time of year to see how many members of this board really care and want to help solve your problem!
Special, special place to be, QB. :) Jan in VA |
If you are at the North Pole in Santas Workshop this might not work. But have you thought of Craig's List. I have seen a ton of used machines for sale at good prices. Just a thought.

I gave my son his Along The Gunflint Trail quilt in a shopping bag in a kazillion pieces for Christmas a few years ago. He thought it was a hoot. And he really appreciated all the work I did when I presented him with the completed quilt months later. Don't let this frustration take the joy out of your quilts or the giving of them.

I called the local machine shop and it'll be up to 3 weeks before they can get my machine in for service!! I'm just so upset right now - these are all supposed to be Christmas gifts and there's no way I'm a fast enough hand quilter to get two 45x65 tops done! I took out my old machine, a White, and it keeps having tension issues so I'm horribly frustrated right now and my husband (as good as he is) just doesn't "get" it as to why I'm so upset. It's because I worked for HOURS on the tops and I wanted to give them to my BIL and SIL for Christmas since we haven't seen them in 5 years! Thanks for letting me vent - I needed to get this off my chest to people who do understand! I'll be popping back on and let you all know if I get the tension issues fixed. :( :? |
If there's a local quilt shop in your area, perhaps they have a machine you can rent?
|
if you by some chance live in indiana, pm me i have one you could use, also check with local dealer, also check if your town has a quilt guild, if so call the president explain the sitution and maybe a member has one you could borrow, also check craigslist for cheap machines..pm me if you are in indiana

On craigs list, the Sears Kenmore with the table for $100
sounds like a really good deal. I'd check into that one for sure. |

Try this on your tension it worked for me. Good luck |
I wish you were close to me. I have three extra machines that would work for you. And I'd be more than glad to lend one to you.
|
Do you have a special friend who would let you come over and use her machine. Or do you have a local quilt shop that would let you use one of their machines
|
I would give them a picture with a note saying that the quilts will be coming. I've done that for my son when a gift I ordered didn't make it in time and he was just as happy as if he'd gotten the gift. Getting a quilt for Christmas is wonderful and I'd bet your BIL and SIL will be tickled knowing that such a terrific gift is coming their way.
I would be totally bummed about the machine and probably saying very bad things. The idea of getting a loaner from the repair shop is a very good one, any chance of that happening? |
Where are you located? I'm in So.Cal. and if you are nearby you can borrow a spare machine from me.
|
I can relate! I had to go buy a new machine because mine died in mid-stitich.
I try really hard not to use my hobby for any deadline work. My hobby is supposed to be just for me and my de-stressing. When I get some project done, I give it to someone or not. That way, it is really a gift of MY heart. And not a &%$%deadline I have to finish. I would like to recommend borrowing or renting a machine or just quilting them a little by hand and giving them anyway. But isn't it wonderful to have a "room" full of people who understand you? |
Take a photo and wrap the photo pieces in a box with Christmas wrap. They will be surprised.
|
Do you have a friend you could borrow one from?
|
Very funny---It took me over 30 years to get my son's promised quilt to him. But he has it now.

Trust me, they will understand and the gift will be even more appreciated after the hub bub of Chirstmas has died down. |

Where are your friends...the ones with sewing machines. I'd bet they'd be very willing to lend you a hand or machine!
|
Where in NJ are you? I'm 30 min. from Ramsey.
|
Geez.. it must be that time of year. I was finishing a quilt top with just one strip left to do and the machine growled at me whined for a sec. and just died right then and there. Lucky me I had a spare machine.
|
Where do you live? Maybe someone could let you use their machine. Many sewers have more than one. I have two but my Pfaff is in for service too. But try it. Someone will help you out. Wish I could. Good luck! Yolanda

I can relate to you. I have a machine I'm praying will hold up, with it's tension issues, long enough to finish a quilted fleece snuggle type wrap. Tomorrow I face the test stiching to see if the tension, will take the fleece, without going bonker. I don't have another machine to fall back on so I'm turning this one over to God. Andie |

It's so frustrating! |
If I make something for Christ mas that is not done by December first, they get it the next year, and a gift card this year. Works for me. I don't do voluntary stress. {HUGS}

Jennifer,
If you have a local quilt store that you shop, call and explain the situation to them. I am sure they have a machine there for the classes etc that they might allow you to borrow. It is worth a try. Other option, is to ask friends who might have a machine tucked away that they dont use often.....hope you find one to borrow. By the way did you ask the local repair shop if you could borrow one?

try freecycle or craig's BEG- maybe you'll get a great FREEBIE! GOOD LUCK!!
|
Just an idea...check with your local senior or community center and see if they will allow to use one of their machines since the other places seem to be booked. I teach at my local center and we have 6 machines available for classes. We don't allow them to be taken home but anyone can come in and use one at the center. Bonus...the tables are HUGE!!! :) Good Luck.

What a bummer! I was working on 4 I Spy quilts for my great nephews and the tops are about 75% done. I finally decided it was just too much stress to try to complete them by Christmas Day. I luckily had bought backup pjs for the boys and the quilts will be fine for next year. I plan to get back on them asap after Christmas and get them done and I'll have 4 Christmas presents ready for Christmas 2011. I understand you wanting to give them a completed present. But stop stressing yourself, enjoy this wonder season, at least you have the tops completed. You can always mail them the completed tops. They will understand more of all of the love you have put into the quilts when they see all of the seams you have in the back and then when they receive them completed, they will see all of your quilting stitches. Sending you a Merry Christmas!

don't you have a girlfriend who can loan you one? Or the repair place? Beg!!
|
What about if you asked a neighbor, friend or family member if they had a sewing machine you could borrow...I think a lot of people probably have sewing machines sitting around they never even use!
