Soap for marking quilts
 

For those who use soap to mark quilts.......do you find the type soap makes a difference. I am wondering if soap which has lotion in it will leave an oily residue and pure soap, whatever that may be, may not.

Ivory says it's pure but I've never used soap to intentionally mark quilts.

I've always used my leftover Safeguard and have never had a residue problem... and it stays on the fabric long enough for me to quilt the area. I only mark in sections, though.

I used Dove on my most recent quilt. It didn't leave any residue and washed out without a problem. My only complaint (and it's not really a complaint) was that it was August and the soap was very soft and kind of slippery in my hand.

Could you keep your soap scraps in the freezer over the hot months, and when it gets too slippery swap it for another from the freezer.
I use soap all the time to mark my dark quilts, for machine or hand sewing

I would assume the quilt must be washed after using soap. Is this true.

I guess you could, if you found it annoying enough. I really didn't find it to be a big deal.

Holice - yes, I believe you'd have to wash the quilt afterwards. The soap doesn't really rub off very easily. I used it to mark scallops, and most of the lines ended up being under the binding and wouldn't have showed. But if you're using it to mark for quilting, you'll want to wash the lines out.

This simple old fashioned tool is one that really works and has mostly been forgotten. To hear about it again is a good tip for new quilters. Thanks for the reminder.

I do wash it , make sure it is actually pure soap without dyes and lotions . I also have used plain white chalk sticks without a problem.

I used soap for marking for the first time this weekend... and was wondering the same thing. I ended up using Dial and it seemed to washout just fine. What I was struggling with is keeping a good sharp edge. How do you guys do that? Just cut on it as needed? I found that if I flipped it around it would sort of sharpen itself at times, but not the greatest. Also are you marking with stencils when you use the soap?
