Soccer ball quilt

I am trying to make a quilt with soccer ball's appliqued on it. My issue is making the soccer ball. I am trying to use a pentagon as the middle black spot then a hexagon for the white. I am trying to make it look as close to a soccer ball as possible. I made one with all hexagon's. It looks more like a flower. So my question is does anyone have that would be willing to share, a pattern to make a flat soccer ball? Or does anyone know of a site I can order a pattern? I have searched and searched and can't find anything.
Thanks in advance for y'all help.
Chris

Yes. But I am trying to make them almost the size of a soccer ball. I can get them close but once I sew the center black pentagon to the 5 white hexagon's it won't lay flat. Then I sewing another seam and it will lay flat. But once I put the next black pieces on it don't lay flat again. I am at a loss. I have been working on it all day. I just can't seem to get them right.

If you Google "Soccer Ball Quilt..." you will get listings of blogs and patterns. The one I like is from CuttingEdgeQuilt...March 2009 blog entry. She uses a white circle and appliques black pentagons on it. She has a centered one, then the ones that are on the edges of the ball, she modifies (shortens sides, etc). Take a look at her photo and it will be self-explanatory. Hope this helps.

Here's one. The quilter used 6" hexagons but you could use any size you wanted. http://www.sew-stitch-learn.com/freequiltpatterns.html

heres a picture of one made from hexagons that shows how to trim some of them so it appears to be more realistic. http://cuttingedgequilt.blogspot.com...1_archive.html

I found one in a book of manly quilts, or maybe it was sports quilts. I can't find the book, but I found the pattern for the soccer ball. I made one for my nephew, and I didn't keep a photo. Basically, it's a pentgon in the center, with hexagons the same side length around it, with the outside pentagons appearing as obtuse triangles rounded off. The obtuse angle in the triangles is about 150 degrees (90 + 60 degrees). The circle is just a little larger than the hexagons surrounding the center pentagon. PM me if you need further help. Maybe i can get my nephew to send a photo.

Actually, it looks a lot like the one posted above in the link http://cuttingedgequilt.blogspot.com...1_archive.html, but that one has some sides on the outer pentagons (mine were just triangles with a rounded side.

Just an update. Thanks all. I finally made myself a pattern that will lay flat. Actually I made 3. One I just applique on the black parts onto a white circle. The other 2 are pieced. But at least they lay flat after putting them together.

Hi. Chris. Do you have a picture of what the final was? I have been commissioned to do one; approximately 60" in diameter. Thanks for any help that you may be able to offer.
