Does anyone know how to make Monkey Socks? My grand daughter (16) wanted a sock monkey for Christmas and no one knew! So she asked me if I could make her one since I told her my brother and his wife used to make them and sold them for a good price but that was 30 years ago! Since then she has passed away and there is no asking my brother, he wouldn't know where to start. So I told her I'll ask some of you here and see what we can come up with. OR if anyone makes them to sell please let me know!

I appreciate the help. Thanks ... Kathy :D

I have seen patterns for sock monkeys in the crafts section of pattern books at JoAnn's. Haven't looked recently, though.

Our local Kmart sells the socks for the monkeys, I made about 10 of these one year for Christmas (a long time ago).

The directions for a monkey and an elephant are on the package of socks I bought.

If you google 'red heel sock monkey' you will find tons of information on making them and getting supplies.

My grandmother made them for everyone and I lost her pattern. My solution was to go strait to Ebay. There I found lots of detailed patterns, socks, and instructions for minimal cost! I ended up ordering a mini pattern with the cutest mini socks. My monkeys are only about 4" tall and 3" wide! Good luck and happy stitching :)

I have a list of over 100 (and growing) sock critters listed on my site.... They are really easy to make and a lot of fun.
There's even a sock skeleton and a little sock monster gift card holder!

I made one recently to go along with a quilt I made. I found many patterns free online... I purchased socks that had contrasting heals/toes from walmart. This was for a baby gift, so I did not want a rough sock. I used a nylon trendy sock and it came out so soft and cuddly. the mother to be loved it!

CarrieAnne 01-01-2011 06:33 PM

The socks I bought at the local farm store had the pattern on the package.

My grandma made a sock bunny for my daughter about 35 years ago. Grandma dressed her in a straight cut dress made from a knit fabric and a pair of panties. My daughter still has the bunny but it has seen better days. She asked me to make her a new one. I haven't seen the sock elephant before.

Carol Duval had Sock Monkey on her show all the time. I sure do miss them.

BellaBoo 01-02-2011 07:22 AM

I use to make and sell them for $40 each to nurses and drs at the hospital. All it took was for one nurse to show the others what I made for her. I was sick of making sock monkeys! The pattern comes with the Red Heel socks. I found the socks at the local Army Navy store. They came three pair to a package. There is a book just for Red Heel Sock creatures. I ordered it years ago.

dphelps 01-02-2011 08:32 AM

I have looked everywhere for a sock monkey pattern that is made of fabric, I guess you could call it a calico monkey. Has anyone seen a pattern like this?

BellaBoo 01-02-2011 08:49 AM

I cut the pattern for the socks from denim and it made a great blue jean monkey. Cotton fabric should work the same as socks. Easier too, no rolling edges.

catrancher 01-02-2011 09:14 AM

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you asked this question. I had one of these when I was a kid. It was my favorite toy. I never even thought to ask for the pattern because I figured the original was lost. (Mine was the red heel kind.) Now I have fabric and a pattern to make a sock monkey quilt. What a great gift for a grandchild (who I don't yet have) to give them a sock monkey and a matching quilt!! My son and his bride are going to have to get busy. I have so many kid quilts on my to do list, and it keeps getting longer. All I need is a kid! I won't get caught up until I have a kid!!

I found some for sale at the CrackerBarrel Country store/resturants,

The Hatcher Center in Pittsylvania County makes them. Good organization. (In Virginia)

Laptop got stuck on stupid and won't let me download anything from there, but I am trying again. With 13 great grands, sounds like a wonderful page to have access too. It took me to a sign up page and than it froze up on me.

wordpaintervs 01-02-2011 04:57 PM

How I have enjoyed reading all the replies. A couple months ago, my big burly grandson came to see me and the first thing out of his mouth, was "You still make sock monkeys, gramma???" Here he is 24 years old and cherishing the one I made when he was a toddler. Put a lump in my thoat. Sure glad this got posted here. Thanks

sak658 01-02-2011 08:44 PM

I was going to make my greatgrandson one for Christmas, but I ordered one online, great size and USA made. He is 10 months old and was so excited when he got it. I did crochet a sock monkey hat for him. Now that was adorable. Got the pattern for that online too.

Cathleen Colson 01-02-2011 10:20 PM

You can buy a kit in a box that has the socks and precut felt clothes to dress the monkey, and his felt teddy bear. I think the kit monkey is called Peejay, they also have a girl. Beverley carries it, and I think JoAnn does, too. About $9.99. I have made several, big and tiny, for grandkids from just the socks, one from the kit.

angelwatcher 01-02-2011 11:18 PM

We had a shop in Sandpoint, ID that has alot of sock monkey kits and the Fabrics from Moda. She now just does quilt shows and sells on her website

http://www.admitonefabrics.com/patterns.htm

I always buy the fabric from her, haven't made a sock monkey yet. Won one of hers at a show a few years back.

Carol J. 01-03-2011 06:04 AM

Three generations of boys have received sock monkeys over the years in our family, the pattern is with the Rockford socks but available in other places.
Every boy has to have one.

I am very glad I didn't see a sock moose or I would have had to make one for my 22 yo.

jazway 01-03-2011 07:07 AM

I always sew mine by hand and use a backstich because it gives and I haven't had a split seam.
