I've been looking around for blocks or setting designs that use a solid piece of fabric either as the center of a block or as a straight or on-point setting block. I have a conversation print (I think that's what someone called it) that I want to use as larger whole pieces. I only have one yard so I could get 42 6" blocks out of it, minus seam allowance, or I could do larger but fewer.
Any suggestions? |
I would use Bright Hopes. It is simple, yet looks hard. It uses partial seams which are very easy. The one on Quilters Cache is not how it is made. The directions are here: http://quilting.about.com/od/piecing...tial_seams.htm You coud easily change the width of both the inside square and the outside rectangles to suit your print. I usually make the center twice as wide as the edges, so it is half the finished block. It balances well and draws more focus to the center square fabric. The pattern, when many blocks are put together, is an over/under weaving of the four outside fabrics.

How about this with the center square cut fom your novelty fabric. The points could be made with a different fabric. |

this is the one I'm doing 6 and a half inch center blocks |
That's really pretty, Ruth, I may have to try it one of these days! Saved it to favorites! Thanks so much.
