Solved - our missing Elmers glue
A while back there was a posting about a shortage of Elmers Glue (a staple for a number of us quilters). I saw on the local news that kids are mixing the glue, water and food coloring to make slime -- there is supposed to be a recipe on the web. The company indicated that they had sold twice as much as they did in the same period the year before.

Yes I posted this in another thread. My granddaughter and her friends are some of the culprits!! I glue baste my quilt sandwiches so will probably order a gallon on Amazon. It isn't available in any of the stores around here. Nor are other brands.
|
I suppose as long as they're not eating, smoking, injecting, or snorting it.......we'll live with this trend, LOL!!

Mystery solved. LOL My twins were complaining they want to the white glue and not the clear Elmers I came home with. Hopefully the store will have some soon because my one DD told me that the clear Elmer's glue does not glue. She wants the white. I was worried they took the white Elmer's glue off of the market as I could only find the clear.

I really enjoyed this thread. I made slime for my kids lots of years ago-they are all in their 40's now.
|
What do they do with the slime after they make it?
|
What do you do with slime?
|
The younger kids love to feel the slimy gross mess. LOL
My kids made it using liquid starch 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup Elmers school glue 1/2 cup liquid starch food color, glitter, small toys, or anything else they wanted to add. mix and knead and let sit for 15 min. Will last for weeks. |

I remember making it with my kids too when they were younger. They had fun with it. They are in their 40's now also. Don't know where the time went. It is amazing, isn't it? lol

Just be careful on Amazon. Elmers has a glue that is permanent.

My grandkids told me it had to be clear? I have not been able to find that, so if white works?

So weird - I was reading Car Hacks for Cleaning Your Car and one of them was to make "car cleaning slime" to press into crevices on dashboard and doors to get out dirt I haven't tried it yet but their recipe was:
Car Cleaning Slime 1/2 cup liquid starch 4 oz. Elmer's glue 1/4 cup water Now if we could just get all the kids to use their slime to clean the cars! |
My DGD, who is 11, has been driving me nuts to make slime. The little turkey has used 4 of my Elmer's glue to maker her slime. I told her this is it, no more using my glue. LOL!! It must be a huge fad among her friends.

I wondered why the glue shelf was empty at my local Walmart!
|
maybe closer to the time when school starts they will have it in the stores again... Maybe July, Aug or Sept... I looked for it one time and they told me at WalMart that there would be more right before school starts.

Michael's has been promoting slime on their website and ads. I didn't know there was a glue shortage though. Just another sign that I'm out of the classroom.
|
Buy it online at Walmart, a gallon for $14.01, spend $35 get free shipping. Not sure if the glue qualifies towards the $35 or not. Prime members Amazon get it for same price, $14.01 free ship no minimum.
The empty small hair dye bottles with the long spout and small hole that are sold at Sally Beauty Supply are excellent for putting glue in and basting with. |
I use the hair dye bottles from Sallys too, actually I just use the tips, they screw right onto the Elmers bottle
|
I use elmer's glue all the time in sewing and quilting, but I use the stick much easier to control tiny amounts I think.
