I have a 1930's red and white basket quilt that has an INK STAIN
on it.
HOW DO I REMOVE IT WITHOUT RUINING THE QUILT ???

The only way I know to remove ink is hairspray and scrubbing but that may be to harsh to do to this quilt.

You would have to test on an inconspicuous area of the red fabric, but I have always used alcohol. You saturate a paper towel with the alcohol and then put more layers underneath and just blot, blot, blot until most of the ink is gone and then wash. You have to move the paper towels frequently as they absorb the ink.

Some folks have good luck with hair spray, just make sure it is the kind with alcohol in it as that is the key ingredient. I just skip that and got straight to the alcohol.

hmmm for most clothing I have used hair spray. Not sure about a vintage quilt.... Many experts here will have much better advice...

No as in rubbing!

I have even gotten Sharpie marker out of a micro suede couch using rubbing alcohol and a paper towel.

Thanks...don't want a drunk quilt...lol

justwannaquilt 11-05-2010 07:14 PM

good luck, just blot don't scrub.

Rebecca VLQ 11-05-2010 07:16 PM

Yeah...the reason why hairspray used to work was because of the alcohol. I saw a clip on it where they say the ingredients have changed even in aqua net so that one doesn't work anymore.

So, rubbing alcohol and blot, blot, blot!

I agree on the alcohol -- have had good luck with hand sanitizer, which is mostly ethyl alcohol. If all else fails, add an applique to cover the stain.

CarrieAnne 11-05-2010 08:31 PM

I would try alchol too!

BellaBoo 11-05-2010 08:52 PM

Find a ink print shop, screen print and ask to buy some of their ink remover.

QUILT4JOY 11-05-2010 08:57 PM

There is also the new stain remover stuff like Tide has. I've seen ads for quilt stain removers in catalogs like Clotilde. Granny's Miracle something.

The printer guy where I used to work used Gojo to clean his hands after he cleaned the press. The stuff he used to clean the press was very potent and smelled awful and was probably too harsh to use on a nice quilt.

Oxy Clean is my go-to stain remover. Make a paste and work it in like with a tooth brush. May take 2 or 3 tries to get it all out

clem55 11-06-2010 04:54 AM

When using the alcohol, I put the stained area over my large strainer and pour the alcohol on the stain. Then let cool water run over the stain., Keep repeating until it is rised away. Letting the water or alcohol go straight through keeps the ink from spreading.

I think Mom-6 might have been talking about Grandma's Secret Spot Remover--I got it at Hancock's. Hope this helps.

dreamer2009 11-08-2010 01:54 PM

I think I have ruined this quilt trying to get this INK OUT !!
I used the rubbing alchol & paper towel carefully and it spread it to the back as I was blotting bit by bit...so I stopped. Now I have a stain twice as big as it was.

Actually this happens to me also....not to fret, just put a bunch of paper towels underneath the quilt and blot it. The ink does spread first and as you continue to blot is absorbed by the paper towels. Sometimes there is a ghost of the ink left, but then rub stain remover, like shout into it and wash and it should be all gone.

Hancock's has a line of stain remover products and one of them says ink. Don't know if it would work on your ink but might.

tjradj 11-08-2010 06:38 PM

The best product I've ever used is an aerosol called "Spot Shot" It stinks to high heaven but dissolves everything, even permanent marker.
I originally bought some at Cosco, but have seen it recently at RONA. (Similar to Home Depot, Lowes, etc.)

debbieumphress 11-08-2010 06:53 PM

Girl, I use alcohol too and it works. Good idea to put paper towels under and keep it up. Takes a few steps. If you run cold water over it, the rinses the color out too. SOmetimes you need more liquid going thru it. DOn't fret. I will call you soon. HUGS
