Thanks, I needed the laugh! Anyway, my husband says to get them and maybe one could be for parts. No, he isn't available! :-)

karenpatrick 01-15-2013 07:08 AM

Featherweights are never going to be any cheaper than they are right now. Go for it.

MimiBug123 01-15-2013 07:12 AM

Sorry! I have 2 and I would say "Go for it"! Even though I have 2, for the right price, I would buy 2 more.

cflykins 01-15-2013 07:26 AM

Go for it! I have a featherweight that I have had for 54 years and have been looking for a second one. Even though I have 3 other machines, the featherweight is the favorite machine that my granddaughters (ages 11 and 7) like to sew on. I have been searching for another one on eBay but they want too much for them. Great machines!

maviskw 01-15-2013 07:41 AM

Most of the people here missed the whole point of the thread. The things were being donated as DOOR PRIZES. I would be leery about that. Someone should look at the things to see if they are "prize worthy". Would you want to win those things? I'm sure these things are good, but you need to be sure. The following is from another post. The only one who GOT the point.

I guess I'm looking at this from a different perspective. This woman offered these items up as a *donation* for a door prize.

Sorry ... but they were offered as DONATIONS. That is what they should be.

Perhaps you'll be lucky and win one. (from DogHouseMom)

misseva 01-15-2013 07:45 AM

GET THEM and offer something else of equal value as a door prize!!!!!!!

Prism99 01-15-2013 09:21 AM

FW as a door prize? I must belong to the wrong guild!!!

If the owner is gungho about donating, then there's nothing wrong with someone buying the machines and the money from the purchase being donated.

I just don't see this as being a big deal. There are lots of people who would not want to win an old sewing machine as a door prize anyway. I could understand the fuss if the machines had already been donated, but that is not the case here.

Also, like the woman mentioned donating simply because she wants to get all the stuff out of that house and that is the easiest way to do it. If she finds that selling the machines is just as easy or easier, it might be her decision to sell rather than to donate.

Momala24 01-15-2013 09:31 AM

I am no help at all! I would definitely say get it. I have one, and like you, probably don't really need it. But she is so cute and so much fun to sew on. They sew like a dream and you can keep her purring with no trouble at all.

roserips 01-15-2013 09:41 AM

I just can't believe as a quilter she didn't know what she had or did she? Anyway accept the donation graciously and put us all in for the door prize. That would be one I would love to win.

justflyingin 01-15-2013 09:45 AM

You're asking at the wrong forum! Ask at the "clutterer's anonymous" website and you'd get a completely different answer. :) You should at least ASK how much they will be.

IBQUILTIN 01-15-2013 10:59 AM

Do what your heart tells you to do

kaylfordsollimo 01-15-2013 11:30 AM

I see "granddaughters" in your signature line. If the price is reasonable, you could be setting them up with a beautiful machine. If that doesn't work for you, I'll make a trip up and get them for my granddaughters. Philadelphia to Ontario is doable.

She was describing things - then said"I even have two of those little Singers in the black boxes,,,"
After further description, I turned to her and said "We have to TALK!"
I really don't need another sewing machine - even if it is a Featherweight. I have my grandmother's 201, my Pfaff 1222e, my Janome 4800 and my daughter's Janome (more basic) - as well as a Singer 99 coming home to me this spring from Thunder Bay. But I have wanted a FW to take to classes, etc. Plus I can't really afford one right now ...
Someone please talk me through this!

kydeb 01-15-2013 12:14 PM

Sorry, no help here. Just bought my 12th machine - a 1938 221! But I NEEDED it!!! You do too!!

nstitches4u 01-15-2013 04:37 PM

Sorry, you are talking to the wrong person---Go for it. Featherweights are great machines---And they are so darn cute!

Pinklady 01-15-2013 05:38 PM

sorry can't help you , I have always wanted a FW, but can't find one or can't afford the price.

lonestardreams 01-15-2013 05:50 PM

No use asking this group for help with that.

LynnVT 01-15-2013 06:00 PM

Someone in my guild sent out an email that she had one for sale a few days ago. I'm guessing it didn't last long. When I bought mine the woman had two, but I only bought the one. Hubby encouraged me to get both, but I didn't see any reason to have two. That was years ago. As usual, he was right, of course.

costumegirl 01-15-2013 06:21 PM

They would be a terrific gift to give to your grand daughters and teach them how to use their own special machine. You will be not only giving them a great machine but also memories that they will have forever.

ps...;) ..if you get them and want to sell, I live closer than Philadelphia ....I'm just a little ways down the 401 from you :)

Wish I could say run, but it would probably be in the direction of the Featherweight. Sometimes you just have to take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves - I'd be kicking myself later. I think it just comes down to whether you want it badly. If you do, maybe you could make payments to her.

We're all terrible enablers. :D I love my Featherweights, I have whittled my herd of them down to 4; even a lovely original tan one among them.
Then there's the treadles and extra heads that fit the Singer cabinets. 18 years ago, I was the proud owner of one Bernina 1031, now the herd of machines consists of different brands and so much eye candy, a mere 17 machines. I have a $2500 plastic wonder, however the vintage/antique machines are what get the most use.

The rest of you need to reread the first post. These things are supposed to be given out as DOOR PRIZES. Read what DogHouseMom has to say above.

Perhaps you'll be lucky and win one.

The way I read the original post is that there was a discussion about donations and the woman mentioned stuff she MIGHT donate-----------I didn't read it that she'd already donated. Then, the way I read it, is that our poster let her know she was interested in buying before the donation.

Maybe I'm the one who read wrong.

I read it that way too.

deenatoo 01-16-2013 09:27 AM

Sorry...I am with the majority here...I would take them, provided the price is right, and give them a good home. They are obviously in a place where they are not appreciated. You will enjoy them! If you don't, call me and I will take them off your hands!!

wraez 01-16-2013 10:45 AM

Geesh I don't know why you are even hesitating ... if it is a good price, get it. One day you might want to give it to a grandchild or another family member ... will you adopt ME?

This is how I read it also. Discussing possible donations is not the same as already having donated something.

SuzzyQ 01-16-2013 02:33 PM

Thank you all ... now I will have contact her. If I wait for her to contact me I just might have a heart attack. My DH already knows I'm certifiable :)

Roberta 01-16-2013 02:38 PM

Arrange payments if you must but don't let it go. You will not regret it. I adore my Featherweight.

Phannie1 01-16-2013 02:39 PM

If you do not get them, some sorry so-n-so will. They need a loving home!

quiltqueen61 01-16-2013 05:05 PM

Ditto!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if someone said "I'll donate $100.00 to that cause" and a friend said "ooooh ... let's talk I could use $100.00" is that right? It's the same thing.

Vicki W 01-16-2013 05:42 PM

Don't buy unless you can afford, or maybe she will let you pay when you can.

Not at all the same thing as the situation described in the original post, IMO.

dkabasketlady 01-16-2013 07:33 PM

I have THREE Featherweights and still want more!! Go for it!!
