is white considered a color or lack of color?
|
I always considered white a color and it has many shades too.
|
white is a color to me....if its not a color..what is black?
|
I was taught that black was all colors and white was the lack of all colors.
|
White is a color. I remember buying a silk and taffeta wedding gown a long time ago. The same dress was available in cream, but the white cost more. When I asked why, it was because they had to dye the fabrics.
|
No matter what the rest of the world thinks, quilters probably would consider it a color because we have to factor it into our design if we use it. Different whites play off of other colors and change it all to the eye viewing the final quilt.
|
I think it is a color also - but others in my family don't think so.. it is always an ongoing debate
|
As an artist, white is void of color and black is a blend of all primary colors.
As a quilter, we think of them as colors. |
Remember adding bluing to your whites to make them whiter? Most fabric softeners are dyed blue  :D:D:D

I guess it adds up to why you want to know.
If you're a scientist, then white is the reflection of all colour, and black is the absorption of all colour. But to a quilter, white is a colour. To a laundry worker, white is a goal. To an old woman, white hair is a crown well earned. It's all in the context. But I do like the smoothie idea. Can mine have blueberries in it? |
To me it is a color, but we were taught in school that it was not a color.
|
I heard white and black and gray are shades. Interesting subject though. Why are they not on the color wheels?????
|
I say yes, but then again..... Well this might help http://www.colormatters.com/vis_bk_white.html :D

White IS a color --- if there were no color, it would be transparent. Here's a description:
"White is a shade, the perception of which is evoked by light that stimulates all three types of color sensitive cone cells in the human eye in nearly equal amounts and with high brightness compared to the surroundings. A white visual stimulation will be void of hue and grayness." Clear as mud?????????? |
I am a picture framer and the offical answer is white is the absence of color --- so why do we have about 70 different "shades" of white mats???

Sorry, I couldnt resist...:) Cindy To me it is a discription of a color tone, White, Cream, Ivory, all forms of a white with different values. JMO |
too funny.. but I guess some would think about it... (insert throwing up noise here)... yuckkkkkkkkk

what I had learned in art.. white and black are neutral's
|
White is the presence of all colors and black is the absence of all color if you're looking at the light spectrum definition. It's opposite if you're talking to an artist. If you're talking to a quilter it's definitely a color and like any other color, there are many shades of it.
Wouldn't you have to mix some yogurt with the ketchup to make it into a real smoothie? A blueberry/ketchup smoothie???? I'll pass |
I learned that it's the lack of color.
But whenever I give my last name, I say "White as in the color." I want to add "or lack thereof" but it gets too complicated. |
As a quilter, it's a color with many shades that plays off whatever is next to it or around it.
|
Technically, white, like black, is considered a non-color, but they look like colors to me, especially with all the different shades of both of them. ;)
|
In terms of design, "white space" is not even necessarily white. I think a pleasing quilt design makes careful use of negative space and has adequate white space -- and using ample whites in a quilt is a quick a surefire way to do that (sometimes.)
For my purposes, white is a color. And a very useful one. RST |
In lighting, like theatre, white is all colors together, and black is the absence of light. In that scheme, the primary cors are red, GREEN, and blue- dunno why. Something appears white to the eye because it reflects back all the colors in the visible spectrum, something appears black because it absorbs all the light waves in the visible doe trum, reflecting none back. Something blue only reflects back the blue, absorbing all others. In art, the opposite is true, black is all colors mixed together and white is the absence of color. Different whites are actually TINTS of colors, and SHADES of colors have black added to them. So pink is a tint of red and dark red or burgundy is a shade of red. One is subtractive color theory and one is additive, I'm not certain which us which but I *think* light(ing) is subtractive. I think quilting is most like art and it's most useful to think of it that way. But both are true/correct. HTH-giggles
