I've only done a couple of rag quilts but the 1/2 as they're sewn together, is right...because you need that much so you can CLIP it and make it fray... Right?

I've had good luck with the 1/4" foot. I think changing to a 1/2" seam would create a BIG can of worms I wouldn't want to open.

you can buy a 1/4 inch foot for most machines. That is what I have done and it has truly reduced the stress

My guess is that if you want a 1/2 inch seam then the key is what is the finished block size for your pattern. The size of the quilt will not change if you do a 1/4 or 1/2 inch seam as long as the finished block size remains the same.

I have the 1/4 foot for my Babylock, and my seams still are off. I am not into precision. I also use a 1/2" seam and
it make it easier for me to sew ands press and if I have to match seams, there is more to match and if one needs to be let out a tad, there is the little to let out.

Personally I think everyone should do what is comfortable for themselves. If sewing 1/2" seams makes it easier for you then buy all means do that, I would not trim the seam down either, unless it's being judged in a show or something. I would think if you cut each piece 1/2" larger then what is called for in what ever pattern you are using, then you should be ok once you have sewn it together.

I never heard of rag quilts but do like hearing the different sizes of seams. I have to agree that a half inch would be easier to open and to press but when one does this, do you make sure to increase the size of the block, such as a four inch would have to be a five inch? Interesting needless to say.

It's your quilt and if you want to cut down large seams and if the wasted fabric doesn't bug you then go for it. Those would be deal breakers for me. I sew HSTs oversized and cut them down and that is a lot of extra work. I would not be willing to do that for all seams. My seams may not be the perfect 1/4" but they are consistent.

I agree with Scissor Queen. I have a 1/4 inch foot on my janome and I love it. :)
