Our local St Jude asks for pillow cases for the pillows and also to cover the IV meds infusing in the patients. Some the kids really have a hard time and if they have something to look at besides the meds they handle the treatment better.
Remember to sew the one way fabrics on the pillowcase so that they are not upside down when over the IV pole.

Yes-the woman who had her potato bags-must have used the wrong batting-have had mine 2 years-use it a lot, and no fires-that is what you get when you use the right materials-and I think the ladies from the church would love to make them also

Hanging hand towel. Trace your iron and add one inch around pattern, cut 2 pieces of fabric, sew around both sides and leave the bottom open, cut a dish towel in half and gather half of the dish towel to fit the opening and sew bottom closed.

Small credit card folder. Cut two pieces of fabric about 12" long and length of credit card plus 1-1/2" wide. Right sides together with light batting on top, sew around leaving opening to turn. Turn, fold each end to inside so it will fit a credit card, top stitch around. Insert credit cards, fold in half and stick in your pocket to shop.

The guild member who made my potato bag did everything just right and it went up in flames on the first use.

I like casserole carriers. I'm sure the round one could be done in that time frame. If you are interested, I can look up the tutorial that I printed out for my church group. If they want to work together in small groups - one cutter, one person at the machine, one presser, etc, it would go quickly. Three people can make three faster than one can make one.

Always a good idea. Why not have each make 2 pillowcases, one for themselves and another to be donated to local hospital children's center, assisted living, etc.

I was thinking abouth this same idea. They could also be made for Christmas presents for the shut ins. Or just Christmas presents for your own family. The 'fellowship' is the same.

Mug-rugs are fast and you can do so many things to make them yours

For the potato bakers use the potato baker batting and cotton thread and fabric-

Pillow cases are so much fun to make using the birthing method.

10 minute table runner .

If you have access to sergers, it takes three seams to make a great pillowcase--six if you make a pair. And they are quick, quick, quick. That's what I would do. froggyintexas

Our women's retreat is coming soon at our church. I've been asked to provide something for women who have never sewn to make in 2-3 hrs. In the past we've made rice filled hot dish holders (very nice), bags (took too long) and wreaths sewn on embroidery hoops (also nice). I was thinking of microwave potato baker bags however, just read the post from someone who had hers catch fire in the microwave so that's out. Does anyone have some ideas? Thanks!

Thanks so much--this 10 minute table runner is incredible!! It will be a big hit--can't wait!

What about the very quick table runner, I call it the 30 minute, because it takes about that long with cutting etc., but I think the correct name is the 10 minute runner. - Choose two fabrics, both the length you want the runner to be, cut one of the 2 lengths 12" wide, the other one 18" wide. Sew these two pieces right sides together, in a tube, down each long side , (naturally one piece will be wider(, making a non sewer think this won't work. Next turn tube inside outand press so that the 18" piece will make a border on each side be sure each side is even all the way down. Then fold the piece with the 12" top part to the inside of the fold, sew straight across each end. turn the ends out, and you have the point, walla a neat and quick table runner.

There is always the 10 minute taable runners. If doing with a group and giving instructions they take about half an hours

One more idea: Christmas star ornaments and heart ornaments. Link to the blog tutorial below.

What about simple ideas for no-sewers at a retreat where they won't have sewing machines available. My guild hosts a class at a retreat for caretakers of special needs children and adults. We need to bring everything to the "camp" and have it simple enough for non-sewers to do in an afternoon. So far I think the above posts seem to involve sewing machines.

Potholders or casserole carriers (for those church potluck dinners).

a friend showed me her 20 year old casserole carried made very simply from a pretty kitchen towel. Her's is not insulated, but I made a couple and lined with Insulbrite. Simply fold the ends of the towel toward the middle. Sew the edges. Add a casing to the ends of the towel and run cord thru it. Actually, add the casing first!

Done--------------

OR the ladies could keep the pillowcases as a reminder of a fruitful retreat!

GrannieAnnie 09-03-2012 11:19 AM

I'm sorry, but I'm a bit miffed that everything from our hands must be donated to some cause. Don't we owe it to ourselves to do something for US once in a while? These women are going to be at a retreat. Why can't they make a reminder of a great weekend without being made to feel they are not generous to others?

Lord, knows I donate tons of stuff. But once in a while, I sew for me!
