When the fabric has more than one color, which color stack do you use? When two colors are equal?

Thanks so much for the great information you guys always add.

Well, this isn't scientific but I lay the fabric by the stacks and step across the room to see it from a distance. Then I make up my mind. For me, a little distance gives a better perspective.

I sort by color even if i have the same design on all of them..

I sort mine by color

GwynR 09-25-2011 06:58 AM

The really busy ones with two many colors to choose to into my "busy" pile.

bearisgray 09-25-2011 07:01 AM

I get "stuck" when a fabric can go nicely into more than one category -

Examples:

Black and white cat print - does it go with the cat fabrics? does it go with the black and whites?

Large multi-colored floral on black background -

Small/tiny florals - by color or style?

The colors that are sort of "in-between" - The bluish green that isn't quite aqua or teal - the blue that is sort of purplish, but not quite purple

mhollifiel 09-25-2011 07:06 AM

Yep, I have two busy piles. One light and one dark

QUILTNMO 09-25-2011 07:18 AM

i sort by color

bearisgray 09-25-2011 07:33 AM

Actually, I do have "sort of a system"

Some are sorted by color - blues, greens, reds, browns/yellows/oranges, tans and creams

Some are sorted by type - cats, butterflies, I Spy, black and white

Some are by size - over five yards, little scraps

I sort mine by color but put the batiks in a separate section, also have separate holiday and kids section

SharonTheriault 09-25-2011 08:32 AM

My poor stash isn't sorted at all. I have thought of trying to organize it, but that is as far as I get, just thinking about it. It's in cabinets with glass doors and is very colorful when you come into the room. I have a friend who is a great organizer. Said she come help me. I haven't gotten far enough to organize for her help. Do you think I might be sorting challenged?

JeannieT 09-25-2011 08:32 AM

I have 1. a "pets" section (I do a lot of pet placemats)
2. Holidays
3. By color (main color that jumps out at me)
4. Solids
5. Novelty - prints that have so many colors no other section works.

Barb44 09-25-2011 09:38 AM

These are my piles:
Yardage that is long and wrapped on bolts.
All batiks and blenders.
White and off white.
Civil War prints.
Patriotic.
Separate color piles.
Multicolor prints with a white background.
Novelties.
I don't have a large stash so the piles are not large.

Thanks so much for the great ideas, and for letting me know I am not alone in my sorting problem. And yes, Ms. Beautiful Pappillion, you are definitely shorting challenged! We also have a Pappillion, named Bella running our household!

scowlkat 09-25-2011 10:40 AM

I sort by colors with batiks, novelty (cats, kids, etc.), landscape collection and hand dyes in their own sections. I keep my flannels separate.

Little RoO 09-25-2011 10:55 AM

I put it in the pile that I think I will chose most fabrics from to go with it.
