Gosh, I hope that's it. I was envisioning putting soup into a fabric bowl... not a good idea!

My first thought precisely!!

Thank you for the tutorial. Do these go into the microwave also and do they serve to keep the soup warmer.

Jim 12-11-2013 12:07 AM

They do go into the microwave along with the bowl. It's to be used like a bowls own personal potholder. I've made them and after the first one, they are SEW simple.

You need to make sure that ALL materials are 100% COTTON - Fabric, Batting, AND THREAD

Walmart.com has the Pellon Wrap and Zap for $3.09 per pkg. 45" x 1 yard. I'm making everyone in my family except the 2 year old one for Christmas. They are so easy to make. Mmm maybe I could make him a mini play one for his kitchen. Lol

tropit 12-11-2013 09:04 AM

I don't have a lot of soup eaters in my family, so I plan to make something similar....tortilla warmers. I'm just making my own pattern with a plate for a template. I'm using "potato bag" batting because it goes into the microwave.

Wrap and Zap is out of stock on Walmart.com. I spoke to Michelle at Pellon who said that it has been shipped to Joann's warehouses but they have no control when Joann's ships it to their stores. Can't be found in LA area stores yet.

You really don't need to make so many marks when you make them. When I make mine, I layer the fabric and batting, then sew both ways on the diagonal to keep the layers together. Fold the block in half and mark the darts 1" x 2-1/4". Do this on all four sides on each block. Place two blocks right sides together. I don't clip the darts, just fold them to opposing sides. Sew two blocks together, leaving a 2-3" opening to turn right side out. Be sure to push the corners out as much as possible. Top stitch all around the bowl, closing the opening. It takes about 20 minutes to make a bowl. I use the "Wrap and Zap" batting by Pellon. I purchased mine at JoAnn's. It was regularly $7.99 a bag but I used a 50% coupon. This is also the batting to use if you make potato bags.

You can custom fit these to your bowls if you measure how high the sides are, and let that guide you in how deep and long you make your darts. Of course it helps to have a bowl with you to try it on for size as you create the bowl-holder.

THANKS for the laugh but I was thinking the same thing. We all have senior moments at one time or another !! My friend made me one and told me it was to be put on top to keep the microwave clean. I told her otherwise. They do really work well. Great idea to use up those scraps of batting.

Do these serve the purpose of insulating the bowl, or are they basically just a pot holder

I was thinking that, too!

You can reheat something in the bowl with the potholder in the microwave, making it easy to remove and not burn your fingers, by grabbing the potholder's corners. Then the potholder helps to keep the food warm while eating, too. These are especially nice if you are holding the bowl while eating (like in front of the tv, lol!).

Oh my, these are very nice. Need to make some of these.

MeLuvQuilts 12-12-2013 05:48 AM

I love my tortilla warmer - I love the idea of making them as gifts. Thanks!

Vintagesewist 12-12-2013 06:01 AM

These are also great for holding your ice cream bowl!
I made a slight change to mine. I cut open the darts after they are sewn and trimmed away some batting so that when the 2 sides are put together there is way less bulk in those areas.

Attachment-241484.pdf I just read all 383 posts to this thread, and no one there had this good idea. Thank you so much.

cherrio 12-12-2013 06:58 AM

I have seen the pattern for the bowls that included the quilted tops to keep splatters from making a mess. have made at least a dozen bowls but never bothered with lids. My kids use them to reheat leftovers, chili etc. not just soup

Thank you for my first laugh on an otherwise frustrating day!

For fear of sounding like a broken record please be careful and selective, when putting fabric in the microwave. A fire in the microwave is a dangerous situation. Arcing in your microwave can also ruin it.

Linda just has "Microwave Fabric Bowls" in her post, and that got me to the long thread. On this thread there are directions to make a bowl with wavy edges. It is made with 8 shaped darts, and is really cute. You can wear it for a hat.

This is the link to the directions to make a plain one. Attachment-241484.pdf
