Southwestern Quilt Patterns
I'm ALWAYS looking for a southwestern style quilt pattern and I think that a lot of quilts I've seen could look southwestern with the right colors... I just have a hard time "visualizing" sometimes. Would anyone know of any 'free' southwestern style patterns? Also, (and I should know this, but I don't) ... does anyone know what quilt block this is and is there a pattern/tutorial for it? Thank you in advance!!!

I don't know the name of the block, but it shouldn't be hard to duplicate. You have one large center square, two small squares and 10 HSTs the same size as the small squares. The blocks in this quilt have been set on point, which is what makes the blocks look more like diamonds than squares.
There is a quilt shop in Albuquerque, NM that has southwestern style patterns; however I don't know of anywhere to get free patterns. I believe it's called Southwest Decoratives, but it's been a while since I've been to the website. You might try searching for seminole quilting patterns. |
The name of that quilt block is Anvil.
Edited to add, the anvil block has several variations. You can find many free quilt blocks on quilter's cache and one of her variations would work but I would be inclined to piece it with less seams http://www.quilterscache.com/T/TheAnvilBlock.html She has several southwestern looking blocks, like http://www.quilterscache.com/B/BrotherBearBlock.html I modified this one to a 12" block quite easily (and also cut out a bunch of seams) http://www.quilterscache.com/S/SquashBlossomBlock.html This one has kind of a Southwest feel http://www.quilterscache.com/M/MontanaMtnMazeBlock.html This one can also be made to look quite southwestern depending on color/fabric placement http://www.quilterscache.com/D/Diamond4PatchBlock.html Also google images of navajo weaving to get loads of inspiration and ideas. many of the more simple weavings can be easily converted to quilt block units. |
J.Michelle Watts (jmichellewatts.com) has this free block - http://www.jmichellewatts.com/free/
Here's a link to a freebie with the blogger's quilt shown - http://myfabricrelish.blogspot.com/2...e-pattern.html from free patterns: http://www.freepatterns.com/detail.h...516&cat_id=436 here's one for a free seminole sampler: http://www.thequiltercommunity.com/wc3ca89d99a1e7.htm additionally, i googled 'free southwest quilt patterns' and found some more! |

You were asking about a southwestern quilt. This is a wall hanging quilt, but with creative borders it could be made into a larger quilt. Hope this is helpful.
