Spacing of Quilting Seams?

I'm doing a panel quilt and would like to know what is the best spacing for Quilting.. I mean the distant between quilting seams when you do not have blocks to quilt. Does this make any sense? I am a novice and have not tackled FMQ as yet, so I will have to do straight stitching. Thanks for any help you can give me. HAVE A HAPPY AND GREAT QUILTING NEW YEAR TO ALL.

Whether you are doing a one piece panel (as you mentioned) or a multi-piece block quilt, the batting you use will determine how far apart the quilting can be to stabilize the batt in place.

It's somewhat your choice as to how far/close you quilt. What you are working on will somewhat determine the distance, as to what looks "right" to you! And remember .... there's no rules! :)

Do you still have the packaging your batting came in? Each brand is slightly different. For example, a package I recently bought says, "Hand or machine quilt up to 6 inches apart." I've seen packages that say 4 inches that I've stayed away from. I'm also a beginner, and not up to that much quilting yet.

just quilt around each large motif, then when that is done, use your own eyes to pick out other motifs that are spaced about right and just keep doing this to smaller and smaller areas till you can see it is all held down....quilting around each motif will make each puff up and show up...

I did one recently, making six inch blocks. I based this on the size of my quilt, the fact that I was using Warm and Natural and could have as much as ten inches between stitching, and six inch blocks seemed to "frame" parts of my design.

Play with it a bit. I used blue painter's tape as a guide for my stitching. Worked fine.

Thanks to all. I am using Warm & Natural so I think I'll try all you suggestions and thanks again AND HAPPY NEW YEAR AGAIN.

You can do the seams 6" apart and it will be just fine. Enjoy!!
