Speaking of Yo-Yo's
Goooood luscious Saturday morning, everyone! I’ve been making bags recently and I’m interested in using either yo-yo’s or fabric flowers as an embellishment. However, every tutorial I’ve seen has raw edges at the center (yo-yo) or hot glued to a felt base (flower). Since the bags are fabric, eventually, they’re going to be washed. How can I stop the raw edges from unravelling when laundered? Would Fray-Check work? I’m thinking I could use a cute button as the center but I still don’t think that would stop the fraying.
And can hot glue be laundered? |
When I make yoyo’s, I turn under the center 1/4 inch when I gather them so there are no raw edges in the center.

You can use one of the makers that come in different sizes. Be sure to check the template size for the size you want.

I use the yo you makers all the time! They are my go to when hubby wants me to sit with him to watch tv---and they turn out perfect! No raw edges shown.

Clover Yo Yo Makers Rhoda spoke about, are really good and eliminate raw edges.

I haven't made any for a number of years. I always turn in the raw edge and do my pull thread over the turned in edge. I too wanted that finished look. The first ones I did I actually tied it off and went around a second time. Was that ever foolish! Turn it under and stitch along the turned edge.

How about using a pin on the back? That way you can remove for washing? Just a thought

I made a couple of bags last year that called for four large buttons. I opted for eight yo-yo's instead. Everyone likes the bag and prefers the yo-yo's to the buttons. I also use the yo-yo makers. They naturally turn under 1/4" to the inside. Mine are hand stitched securely all the way around the outside edge. One of my bags sold for $60 in a silent auction at Craft Camp.
