Has anyone done the Spicy Spiral Tablerunner? LQS is offering it as a class in a few weeks, and I really like the way it looks. I think it'd make a really cute Christmas gift.

The thing is, it requires a 9 degree wedge ruler, and they are an additional $29 on top of the class fee and pattern.

If you've made one of these, have you been able to use the ruler for anything else? I recently purchased the Wing Clipper and the Tucker Trimmer for the Back to Nature quilt I'm doing, so have recently invested a significant amount in rulers. If I can use them for more projects (so far, LOVE the Wing Clipper, haven't yet used the Tucker Trimmer), I don't mind - but I don't want to end up with one I'll never use again.

No, haven't even heard of it but sounds cool.

Hi, check on ebay. I recently got my 9 degree wedge ruler off of there for about half that including shipping. It was a set of 3 wedge rulers. I haven't done the spiral tablerunner but I am working on a circular bargello wall hanging for my son. They are cool to do with the wedge rulers. Also check on amazon too if you don't see what you want on ebay.
Thanks,
Sherryl

I love the 9degree wedge ruler it is so much fun. I've made spiral quilts, table toppers, butterfly quilts, and butterfly wall hangings. I think it would be worth your time and money. I also took a class, but I think you could probably learn it yourself, there is a book out I think it is called quilts without corners, it is a good book, and explains very well.

You can do all kinds of different things with the ruler, I used it to make a bargello type quilt, by turning the ruler 180 degrees, and sewing them into a straight stratta. It turned out really neat.

The wedge ruler you need for the spicy spiral table runner is the long one. Not the one that comes in the 3-pack.

I made the table runner, and just yesterday I bought fabrics to make a Christmas one.

The ruler is expensive but I borrowed one from a friend. I was surprized how much I loved making the runner. I've made a few and I need to give the ruler back sometime. If I ever find one cheap, i'll buy it for my self.

Check out my blogpost where I made my first one.

I think I bought that set of 3 a few years back a quilt show. It was amazing how it goes together.

I haven't made anything using the rulers.

Thank you!

Since you've made it - and also might like one of your own if the price is right - would you take a look at this and see if you think it will work? It's much less expensive than the one that is advertised specifically for Spicy Spiral.

Either way, your comments and picture have pushed me over the edge. I'm definitely signing up for the class. The sample they had up was done in non-traditional Christmas fabrics.

If you click on this link, then scroll down, you'll see the class sample. The picture is kind of small, but if you click on it you'll get a larger picture. http://www.ivythimble.com/classes/8_2010class.htm

I made many Christmas tree skirts and getting ready to do the table runner so I have used it many times so yes it was worth the investment in my book.

This is stunning! Do you have a pattern to sell? I'd love to make one. I have the long wedge ruler set of three and the mini set of three I bought years ago from quilter designer
Marilyn Doheny. It seems to be popular again. The rulers are much more expensive now then what I paid for them.

My longest wedge ruler makes a 25" wedge. Is this the size needed for the tablerunner?

AtHomeSewing 07-16-2010 11:18 AM

I am wondering, do these rulers need to have markings on them, or is it simply the shape that makes them useful?

peaceandjoy 07-16-2010 01:37 PM

Well, I've registered for the class ($30), will get the ruler (almost $30) and asked them to set aside the same 8 fat quarters that they used for the sample... One expensive table runner!! However, I'm hoping to like doing it well enough to make a few more for gifts. Just such a unique look, so different that my usual rectangular runners.

I don't think the one from jukebox.com that I linked before will work; it's too short. I could probably line up a regular quilting ruler to get the length I'd need, but what a pain in the neck. At least by taking the class, I get a percentage (10 or 15) off of the supplies I buy.

Calla Lily Quilt Shop the one place I found the pattern, wants $6.95 shipping to mail the paper pattern. I just mailed a pattern the same size and it was under $2. Now this is one shop I will not be ordering from online.

Any other shop I can order this pattern?

gailmitchell 07-18-2010 12:13 PM

Yes, the 25" ruler is the one you need for the spicy spiral table runner.

kwiltkrazy 07-18-2010 01:09 PM

Gail Mitchell, I would sure like to see a large picture of your avatar.

gailmitchell 07-18-2010 01:32 PM

This is a quilt top that I made and donated to a local church womens group who hand quilted it and raffled tickets on it. They made over $3,000. I was so proud.

Here is the link to my blog where I show it, and also the link to the free pattern for it. It's called Nines and Vines.

I did one recently with no pattern other than what I'd figured out on my own. When I get it back from my quilting instructor, (she borrowed it and my rulers) I'll post some pics.

I would love if you posted pictures. I would love to have other patterns/ideas to use the long wedge ruler.

I saw it on Phillips Fiber Arts for $9.98: http://phillipsfiberart.danemcoweb.c...p/product/STP/

The ruler it needs says 10 degree wedge though, not 9 degree. That is 4 extra wedges in a complete circle but still do-able, I suppose & it is $19.98 for the 25 inch wedge ruler.

The site says they welcome international orders but it also says that orders under $75 are charged $7 shipping in the US so over the pond is probably going to be double that.

Quilts Without Corners by Wendy Phillips uses wedge rulers and explains how to use them - I bought two sizes singly but haven't used them yet

I can't wait to try out one of these Spicy Spirals. My LQS is offering a class and said they'd have the pattern and rulers in shortly. I don't know if the class will fit into my schedule, but with the pattern and the ruler I should be all set anyway. :)

Bobbinchick 09-15-2010 10:06 PM

I made one and I'm fixin' to make another one. I have the 9 degree ruler and I enjoyed making mine,, took me about 3 or 4 days to make it. So when they start putting out Christmas fat quarters I'm going ot make one for my table for the holidays. It takes 8 fat quartes ranging from darks to lights. Mine was the first item I posted in this board. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

I used the 15" 9degree ruler for mine. I got the top and the rulers back and now have mine quilted and bound. I have pictures I just need to get them onto the computer and on here.
