Spider-Web Quilts

What has happened to Spider-Web Quilts? I've come across my papers and template from Missouri Star and have scraps and charms to use for one of these quilts, but are they still popular? String quilts seem to be everywhere, but it's been a while since I've seen anyone post about Spider Web Quilts. All comments welcome.

I don't pay attention to quilt styles so I don't know the answer to your question. I would rather make my own "style." If you want to make a certain quilt and you have the supplies, go for it!

I agree! I am often so far behind in the "current trends" I often wonder by the time I make a style of quilt that was super popular years ago, it will be a current trend again! LOL. For example the "Swoon" quilt was all the rage about 5 or 6 years ago. Everyone was making them, and there were many examples of it at quilt shows as well as here on the QB. It took a while to grow on me or maybe I had to see examples of it that impressed me enough to make one. I have fabrics set aside in my stash for my someday Swoon but I could end up changing my mind down the road. I have made a spiderweb quilt and it was a lot of fun to make. I actually made so many blocks I had enough for three of them! I have completed and gifted two of them but the third, blocks all made and sashing cut, just need to be assembled into a top. Here is a picture of mine which is a bit different than some spiderweb quilts. https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...t-t259196.html

I think spiderwebs, like log cabin can be a great scrap buster.

Oh Gingerd what a fun example of a spiderweb and uses even more bits and pieces. Thanks for the link! This would make a fabulous Halloween decoration.

Looked at your sisters spider web project and love it. I am like feline fanatic-I am not with the trends and am always behind on what is the latest happening patterns. Usually I don't like new patterns or fabrics until they are about 1 or 2 years old then I can't find them. I like to make traditional patterns so I pretty much stick to the older styles.

I have done Bonnie Hunter’s free pattern Spiderweb scrap quilt in the 2 different arrangements. I still love both of them. Spiderweb is a great way to use up scraps. I am currently quilting my Boxes Of Strings pattern that has a tutorial on QB. It is another fun scrap project. Do whatever scrap pattern appeals to you! Trends come and go.

Quilting is timeless! The spiderweb has been around a long time and I think it will be so for a while. I like to make whatever strikes my fancy!

Never made a spiderweb quilt. I don't worry about anything being in style.

Like all quilt patterns, Spider quilts only have to be popular to the maker and the receiver. I think they are beautiful, but way too many pieces for my impatient self.

Have fun!

I gave up on that a while ago.

Ahhhh What a perfect time to think of a spiderweb quilt. I have not made one.

Be yourself. If you really like a new trend then try it; otherwise, do what you want. I call myself a renegade classic quilter. I like traditional but often change things up to my liking. A quilt should reflect your individuality, so enjoy the process.

I have one in my UFO Box. Thanks for the reminder! I used scraps and the papers/template from MSQ. Just not finished. Why? Who knows. :o

AccuQuilt has recently released a new spiderweb BOB die so my guess is that is an indication that this old style quilt is not unpopular. Make your quilt, enjoy the process, and enjoy! Let's face it - what is popular or an unpopular style quilt pattern today will still be someone's vintage find in the future. (lol)

I have never been a 'trend' person, so I can't say what is trendy right now. I just do whatever catches my eye.

This is timely for me because I just went through about 4 dozen old quilt magazines and pulled out all the patterns I liked and organized them in sheet protectors in binders. Very soon I noticed that almost every single one of the "new" patterns offered over the several years worth of various magazines are variations of old, traditional patterns. They don't go out of style, but each quilt designer manages to put a personal interpretation into it, and that's what makes each one special. The only quilts that tend to look passe to me after years have passed are the ones that too closely adhered to the trends of the moment. For a time about 20 years ago there were far too many quilts that had lime green and purple, and that can get old in a hurry if it's everywhere you look. Still, some people managed to give even those trendy choices a timeless flavor - beats me how they did it. If you want to do a spider web quilt, what's to stop you?!
