Spider Webs in quilts
 

A friend of mine just showed me a quilt that had a realistic spider webs stitched by hand on it. I seem to think that there the webs represent something, but just what I don't know. Does anyone know any info about how these webs came to be on quilts, or the history of it? It seems so odd to me to have a web on a quilt, but I figure must be a reason for its use.

Never heard of that before but it makes sense especially with Crazy quilts.

I know that there are Christmas ornaments with spider webs. Don't know if it's the same story:

It's not a crazy quilt, but the idea of good luck may just have been the motiviation for putting it on this quilt. Seems that I've seen webs on regular quilts from time to time.

My MIL said - To ensure a restful night a spiders web was stitched into the bottom hem to stop bad dreams from sneaking under the covers. Quilting was /is still a great way to give ourselves a mental health check and the web caught all our fears-anger - sadness-etc.. and the receiver of the quilt did not inherit are upset feelings. Kind of makes sense

I would sleep better if it was called a "dream catcher". Spider webs are made by spiders, and I wouldn't want one in my bed. :-)
