I am a very new quilter, but before I became addicted to quilting, I used to be impressed with Hobby Lobby. But after going into Hancocks, I can no longer make myself go to Hobby Lobby for my supplies. The first time I went into Hancocks, I was flabbergasted at the amount of fabric and notions they had in one building. In my opinion, it is even better than Joann's. So needless to say, Hancocks will be getting a lot of my money in the future.

I love the ladies at my Hancocks. They know me and know what I like. I love going in there.

Hancock.com is great too I much prefer to shop with them on line then Joann's. If they don't have the yardage you need they will call and tell you how much they have and see if you still want it. Joann's just doesn't send it. I have yet to place an order with Joann's and get the fabric I ordered I don;t understand how they could always be sold out of what I want, however with hancock I have never had a problem.

I dropped some money in Hancock's this week with their big sale. While I was there someone came in looking for fabric they saw online but was not in the store. The clerk told them they could order it online and get it delivered to the store and not have to pay the shipping charge. Now, this is just what I overheard, so I don't know that is the policy everywhere, but it is worth checking into.

I like Hancocks but still like Joanns coupons. I look for deals!

I'm so jealous. You are all always talking about great Hancock Fabrics stores. The closest one to me is TINY. Just a little bitty thing in the mall.

Not all Hancocks are created equal! The one I like going to has a limited supply of cottons, and TONS of fleece!

Also, we have been hearing about a problem with people using their debit cards at Hancocks and having big ticket items show up on their cards at other stores that they have not been to. Just surfaced a couple days ago, but appears to be pretty wide spread. Hope it is resolved quickly.

It sounds like that was one store. I have never had a problem with the one here.

We have Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, WalMart & Mill End Textiles and a few LQS who have such high prices that I cant afford. We make a road trip to St Cloud MN a few times a year to shop and play at Crafts Direct. I havent gotten brave enough for on-line fabric shopping

Be sure to sign up for the little keychain card, it gets you on the mailing list. They are getting better sales than they used to - at least here where we have both Joann's and Hancock's about 5 miles from each other.

I am so sad, from the sounds of things your Hancocks are like ours used to be. We have two of them in our area. Its so sad, I loved those stores and they had a very wide assortment of fabrics, not only quilting but Batiks, and novelty fabrics. I have been in there recently both stores and they have fell apart. Their cotton assorment is almost nil, in fact all thier fabrics are shrinking. I don't know if they are closing or what, but its a shame. I loved going into thier stores, had a way better selection than JoAnns, but then I haven't been a fan of JoAnns since they had a witchy poo of a manager. I wrote the company and complained, and they didn't even respond. So that sold me off them.

Anyway its sad.

I usually only lurk here but this thread has grabbed me.

We had a wonderful Hancocks near us. I always bought my quilting fabric and supplies there. Then about 5 of 6 years ago they started selling alot of furniture, baskets, lamps, etc. and less fabric. It started to look a lot like Pier One (nothing bad about Pier One, but I went inside to buy fabric!). They also started selling ALOT of fleece. Their cotton quilting fabrics was dwindling. In a year or so, they went out of business. Now there is no Hancocks anywhere near me. Not even 250 miles away!!

As for Joanns witchy poo manager mentioned here, the Joanns store near my old house had one of those for quite a while. No amount of complaining to corporate helped. Corporate emailed me that a store manager is pretty much the BOSS and can run the store however they want. I have since moved to the other side of the state and the Joanns near me now has a wonderful manager, even accepts others coupons (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc.).

But I still miss having a Hancocks to shop in. Shopping online just isn't the same for me.

They always seem to get the lion's share of my allowance too. :D I also sew clothing and purses, ect., the patterns are on sale a lot there for a buck. I love the ladies in my local store and the cotton quilting fabric is a very nice quality. The only complaint is, I wish they had nicer batiks. Thiers is so ugly!

I am glad you stepped into hancocks and found a better supplier for your hobbies. I love shopping my local quilt stores too. I have about twenty of them within a fourty five minute drive of me. (Oh No!) They have patterns and fabrics you can not find in a chain store. It is like a quilter's dream come true.

One place I have found recently is the Ben Franklin store that I had not gone to in years. They have some nice fabric and crafts in there too. I was surprised. They carry many moda fabrics for less than the quilt shops. Go figure ...

not sure where your hancock is located. But the one in my city does not have the stock that JoAnns does. So in my location the better to the two would be JoAnn's.
However I am lucky to have both stores.

I prefer my JoAnn's over Hancock's here. More of a selection at JoAnn's. Also, if you have the little keychain card from Hancock's, they will accept coupon's from other stores.

Bith my local Hancocks and JoAnne's accept each other's coupons. don't know if that is an across the US thing or just local, but it really makes it nice.

fatnsassy, I'm glad your Hancock's is great....mine is ok, but not a great selection in cotton fabric, they've got the fleece and bridal material though- about half the store! And they've increased their 'home decor' dept. The do have notions and some quilting 'gadgets', etc.

The Hancocks near me is not very good. they are the only fabric store in this town and they are going down hill. The customer service is poor and the store looks dirty all the time.

Sounds like we live in the same town! Yes, my Hancocks is pretty dirty, and there's not much help! My other options are the local Wal Mart, and a pricey Quilt shop/Bernina shop. I do make a special trip to NC to shop at Mary Jo's Fabric...it must be the worlds largest fabric shop, miles and miles of bolts of fabric...at really great discounted prices. You have to see it, to believe it. Unless I need a lot of fabric, I won't go as it is about 1.5 hrs away one way. But it is a great experience!

I always loved Hancock's also but they left our city years ago. I miss having them as they were down the street from Joann's and I could go both places.

I agree, I most always shop Hancocks first, they are so great with their service which is huge for me! Joann's has a lot but the service is so slow and they get crumpy! Hobbylobby is ok, probably should go their more but don't.

You won't be dissapointed- it's really something. No it's not fancy, it's a 'warehouse' , but nicely organized. You can get quilt fabric quality fat quarter for...45 cents each - 1.79 each. Yes, that's right! I've bought Moda fabric, current selection, at $5.49 per yard, yes Moda! And that's their 'normal' prices, they do have sales as well- real bargan prices!. I've bought Marcus Brothers Civil War fabric (Rothermel designer) for $3.79 per yard- regular price! You must visit Mary Jo's!

The HobbyLobby here has a very limited fabric section, but I stop once in a while to see what they have..you never know :wink: The local Hancock's was 1 mile away and I loved it there, not huge, but lots of cotton and fleece. Sadly they closed when the new super sized Joann's opened. The nearest one is now in Dayton, 1 1/2 hours away :cry: :cry: My neice was in school there for a while and it was a great excuse for a roadtrip!! I have several LQS nearby, but I have to be a little cost smart!! Projects, usually gifts, I know will be taken care of I don't mind spending at LQS. I find you have to really watch the quality of the fabric at Joann's, some of it is really junk and the cutting line is always long, and their staff not very knowledgable. I find it hard to get straight cuts

You are LUCKY to have any size hancock's nearby. Don't burn up all the plastic in one trip :D :D

All the Hancocks in the Phoenix area went out of business. Now Joanns has no competition and their prices went way up.
Only one Hobby Lobby and it is miles from me and the fabric dept. is small.
Walmart still has fabric.
Lots of local shops but too expensive so I shop online most of the time.

My Hancocks closed a couple of years ago -- they were 100% better than the JoAnns...........................

The Hancocks that I loved burned down and I along with a lot of others have to go to their other store out by the big mall. It is a more of a corporate store and their selection is huge but there is no organization at all.

The manager is a real butt head and not many customers like him and have had problems with him and his attitude. He made the mistake of getting smart with me and I told him in so many words that if he didnt settle down I was going to use him for a mop and clean the store with him. After that he is like my best friend and goes out of the way to make sure I have what I need. :mrgreen:

Our Walmart doesn't have fabric anymore! They took it our about a year ago when they remodeled. And we don't have a quilt shop in town anymore. I drive 25 miles or so to the closest quilt shop.

Pam... u really should try fabric.com.... I have ordered twice this month due to the comments from the folk on here & they are ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!... free shippin on 35.00 or more, coupons after the 2nd order, free shipping on returns if u aren't fully satisfied and so much more! Sales are tremendous. I give them a 10+ out of 10! I never did the online shopping at all, but this is great! I think you can also send checks too if you aren't comfy using a credit card.

Does anyone know if there is a Hancocks' in the New Jersey area? I haven't heard of any near me in central Jersey. Thanks...

we don't have one here. only places for fabrics are joanns, the quilt shop which is moving out of town and walmart. lucky you

I like Hancocks too but I also liked my trip to the Hobby Lobby in Greenville SC last month.
