Spray baste quilts
I usually spray baste my small quilts. So this is how I do that:
First, but a large tablecloth or sheet on table.( I use my cutting table), Next remove cat off sheet.! Then lay backing on sheet. Remove cat.....and put out and shut door, listen to meows and paws on door. Ignore!!!!!! Spray backing and then put on batting, spray batting, and then put the top on. Let the cat back in and then remove the cat from top..... I find that I don't get the spray all over my table and everything else.....Try this....it works.....If you don't have a cat, it goes a lot faster....Hope you find this helpful..... |
This is hillareous. Thanks for the laugh. I don't spray baste but have the same problem when doing anything else quilting.

For larger quilts, it helps a lot to lay the batting on the backing *before* spray basting. Then fold down half of batting, spray baste that half, smooth that batting down, fold up the other half of the batting, spray baste and smooth.
Cats just *love* to help!!! |
Maybe a little taste or smell of spray basting would help to convince the kitty of not helping with this part!!! I had a kitty once who just oved to put her little paws and claws into my feet when using the pressor foot.......this made for some very funky sections when sewing.........so I broke her of this habit by everytime a claw would go in.........my knee would raise and spray her with a shot of water. This worked for a couple of months until one day while chasing the water sprinkler in the yard she realized she loved to play in water. Now I sooo miss my little helper.

I'll have to remember that tip with the water, maybe it will work. Max (the cat) just likes to have all the attention, and I love him dearly. But sometimes....What a pest!!!!!

OMG!!! I thought it was just my cat who thinks she has to be in the middle of EVERYTHING. That's funny

This cracked me up. :D Our little, furry family members can be so funny!

what is it with the cats? Mine will find any scrap of quilt to lay on. Not fabric, not the sofa, not the carpet, but if a bit of quilt is peeking out from under somewhere - she's on it. Yesterday she decided to nap against the sewing machine right behind the pressor foot. Even running the machine didn't move her. I had to physically move her to another spot so i could sew! sheesh!
Glad she doesn't have claws ! |
My dogs are the same way. Anytime I try to lay out my quilt top for measuring, for putting together my quilt sandwich - whatever it is I am doing - they are right there trying to lie down on top of it! I chase them off, but they come right back. It's like there is a sign on top of it, written in doggy, that says, "Come lie on me, you'll never find another spot so comfortable!!!"

I know how you feel. My other cat Maggie has to lay on the quilt that is on my lap, trying to sew on a binding and she doesn't like to be moved.....Did you ever believe that our cats rule!!!!!
