spray basting and PVC quilting frame
 

Usually I crawl around on my knees hand basting.....YUCK! Many of you rave about using 505 to spray baste it so I'm going to give it a try. I use a floor standing PVC quilt frame which means after I complete a section I need to lift the top bars, shift the quilt to a new section then, resnap the top bars in place. My question is, does the spray basted sandwich come apart or stay together when you move it from section to section?

I have spray basted and hand quilted with a large hoop in my lap--my favorite method. I had no problems with sandwich coming apart, nor needling,,,I do prefer using a small, short needle tho. I usually toss my quilt sandwich on a bed, take the hoop off and move to another spot, and I do start in the center. My 2 cats want to get 'into the act' now, so I do FMQ more often. Pin your sandwich in a few places if you are concerned .

I don't use spray basting when I hand quilt. I put the quilt on my long arm and set the stitch length to the longest I have. Then I just stitch straight rows across it about 6 inches apart. The quilt sandwich is perfectly basted and I am not crawling around on the floor. I can also use odds and ends of thread and bobbins so I don't have those almost empty spools and boobins waiting to be used.

I've hand basted many quilts using Sullivan's spray and never had a problem with gunked up needles. But, yes, always good to try a sample.

I have tried this method and it works

I only spray baste for my pvc and hand quilting. I love it, because if it does become wrinkled, you can just pull it apart and pull on the backing, or batting, that needs adjusting, and clamp your pipe in place and you are ready to go. I don't have any problems with my needles, and I usually spray pretty heavy.

When I hand quilted I would tape my quilt back to the top of a table, add batting and top and baste that way. I have used spray basting for free motion quilting on a domestic machine. I used a couple of safety pins on the edges to make sure the "sandwich" would stay put. I have never hand quilted a quilt sandwich that was spray basted. I would make double sure and do a little trial before spraying a whole project. The needle might not slide as smoothly but some of the posts above are encouraging.
