Thank you to whoever it was that raved about spray basting. I finally tried it, and I'm a convert. It took 14 minutes to baste a 52 x 60 quilt!

I'm with you...tried 505 yesterday...what great stuff!

Prism99 03-17-2009 07:04 PM

Yuppp!!! :P

littlehud 03-17-2009 07:42 PM

It is the most amazing stuff. Saves my knees and works better that all that pinning. I love it.

JoanneS 03-17-2009 09:47 PM

Saves knees AND backs in addition to time!

What is this miracle product?

racnquilter 03-18-2009 06:12 AM

Do you hand quilters use this product also? How well does it hold up (stay together for long run) to being crunched up in a bundle while working in lap frame?

sunnyhope 03-18-2009 12:12 PM

what is this?
i m a newbie

spray basting. can's of a light spray that you spray onto your quilt backing, gently lay the top down and smooth, turn over and spray again the other side and lay the backing down smoothly. All done basting!!
Sulky, 505 etc. there are several brands out there. i would spray outside with the quilt on a folding table if i were you but it works wonders. no more pinning or thread basting the layers together for me. too hard to get up off the floor or bend over forever when using a table.

JoanneS 03-18-2009 05:39 PM

Don't forget to spray in a ventilated spot. I did mine outside.

:D :D :D It could have been me who recommended spray basting. I first tried O'Sullivan's (?) that I got at Hancock Fabrics. I loved it for the ease. No more pinning for me! BUT it smells to the high heaven and you must use it in a very well ventilated area. Now I am using 505 that I got from Connecting Threads and it works even better and DOES NOT SMELL. Yay!

Try it, you'll like it!

Hi,

I love 505 basting spray and use it all the time....it's the best.

I used to use one I purchased from Joann Fabrics and I'd come up from my sewing room with a headache and feeling dizzy almost. It was horrible. Even the dog got funny from it. Think we were getting "high" down sewing....LOL

505 doesn't do that. I use the Sulky 2000 for my embroidery things, love it, too.

I really think all the sprays should be used outside if possible or in your garage (only if you don't have a water heater in there!). fumes aren't good for any of us.

Justquilting 03-19-2009 06:20 AM

The spray is the best thing. I use it all the time. The dogs hate it and leave the room. So keep a window open and vent the room after to get rid of the fumes. YUK!!!

I used spray basting for this king-size quilt and it worked beautifully.

Son, Devan, loves it.

Thank you. I kinda like that boy, too. And the quilt was fun to make.

Beautiful quilt, great job, love the greens. I going to try spray basting my next quilt - it seems easy.

Ninnie 03-25-2009 04:19 AM

I mostly use a floor frame and don't need it then, but sometimes I lap quilt and it is great. The stuff from Walmart is no good and couldn't fine the other I used, (threw can away and didn't know name) I will order some 505 today! Thanks for tip!

Did you do any other basting besides the spray, (pins, etc?). How did it hold up doing a king size quilt?
Machine or hand quilted? Curious minds want to know!

Dear Curious Minds: Nope! No pins, no basting, etc. Just the 505 spray. I was careful, tho, when quilting it and didn't handle it more than I had to. I kept the excess either folded or rolled out of the way when quilting sections. Also I didn't do any intricate quilting patterns, just used my walking foot to stitch in the ditch until I got to the border and did a meander stitch there. Hope this helps.

JoanneS 03-25-2009 10:57 AM

This is the 1st time I've spray basted, so I did SOME pinning, especially on the edges just to keep it from catching on something and coming apart. I quilted like I do in general, from the middle to outside. I haven't used it with intricate machine quilting yet, just meandering. The current quilt has sky and water, so meandering the simulates waves and clouds. I'll post a picture when I finish. This is the 1st of quilts for twins that are ALMOST identical - the quilts, not the babies. I think I'll be able to start quilting the 2nd tomorrow.
