Has anyone tried this instead of a free motion foot?

yikes, what do you do when the needle goes dull? yes, i know, buy a new one.....

Yes, and it works great. You just put in a new needle if it gets dull. The spring pulls off and can be placed on different needles. But, I don't necessarily recommend it. I've been FMQing for many years and it still makes me nervous. There really is no protection from the needle going into your finger or hand. FMQ feet are much safer, IMO.

I wondered if the spring came off. Thank you.

I used one of those on a White treadle that didn't have a darning foot. It worked great. I don't believe I would be brave enough to use it on an electric machine - that is just me - I'm sure it would be fine.

I use spring needles a lot. If you pay attention to what you are doing I don't find them dangerous. My rule is don't use it while other people are present, they will distract you.

Thank you Kat Sews. I had bought one and wasn't sure about it but will now give it a try.
