Square quilt vs. Rectangular

Hi. I'm getting ready to start on my next quilt.
I'm going to make a granny square lap sized quilt.
I don't want a huge block design. So I'm making my blocks finish at approximately 15". But I quilt
straight lines on my dsm, didn't like free motion.
With sashing the width will be 66", but I don't want
to try to wrangle more than that under my machine
when I'm quilting it, so it would be 66" square, if I
make the length the same as width. Do you all preFer rectangular over square quilts?
Thanks!

I usually make rectangle quilts if I am making a throw or a bed quilt. But if I am making a baby quilt it is usually square.

DebraK 05-02-2016 09:14 AM

For adults, I prefer rectangle. I make baby quilts both ways.

Mariposa 05-02-2016 09:16 AM

I tend to do mostly rectangle quilts, as I have tall folks to cover. :) For babies and younger kids, I'll do either.

dunster 05-02-2016 09:36 AM

I like square quilts so they can be turned any direction. But sometimes the pattern is such that square doesn't work out.

I love square quilts. 65" square is my favorite size. Makes a large play mat for babies, is an oversized bedspread for toddler beds & transitions nicely into a lap quilt as they get older or looks decent as a topper on a twin bed. I love the symmetry of square quilts and enjoy the extra fabric on the sides when snuggling under them.

I also love square quilts. I like the symmetry and if the user is a bit taller, they can turn the quilt on the diagonal. You can also display the quilt on the diagonal on a bed or couch.

I'm a rectangle quilter and adapt square patterns to rectangles. I like to make throw size. They are wide enough to cover and long enough to grow from chin to tucked in toes.

Annaquilts 05-02-2016 12:47 PM

I make many square quilts as I like the look but the most usable ones are rectangle since many of us are rather tall.

Jingle 05-02-2016 12:58 PM

I have only made one square quilt. Otherwise all rectangle. They fit people better.

AliKat 05-02-2016 01:07 PM

I prefer rectangle quilts. My bed is rectangular. The few wall spaces would look better with rectangular wall quilts. and I love my rectangular cozy quilt as I can use it to nap on the couch and be well covered,
Though for baby quilts I would probably do a few square quilts for the baby to lay on the floor.

ctyankee 05-02-2016 01:36 PM

I love square quilts, but one of my daughters think that's odd for a bed quilt. I don't agree, but I understand that a rectangle quilt certainly fits better, so I will do either. For babies, I mostly make square quilts, but have done rectangular, depending on my design.

maminstl 05-02-2016 01:58 PM

I rarely make a quilt to use on a bed, so will make either just depending on the pattern. I do make them big enough to use as a blanket. Don't need one for the bed, because I NEVER make it anyway:)

ManiacQuilter2 05-02-2016 03:28 PM

I usually make rectangle quilts but with baby, sometimes I make them square.

Mkotch 05-03-2016 02:19 AM

I make my quilts whatever shape they end up! Sometimes the blocks suggest a particular shape or look better that way. I made a log cabin star quilt that just had to be a square - making it rectangular would just have looked wrong. If I'm making it for a particular bed (king, queen, etc.), then I might worry about its shape. Usually, I just make quilts and think about who they're for later (if ever!).

JENNR8R 05-03-2016 03:00 AM

Square quilts are easier to make, but I only make them as wall quilts. I'm not as wide as I am tall yet so I make them in a rectangle shape to fit my body. If I keep gaining weight, my attitude could completely change.

quilterpurpledog 05-03-2016 03:04 AM

I am in the process of quilting a rectangular quilt for a grandson who is quite tall. The pattern started out as square-had four twenty-five inch pieced squares. I made six squares and arranged them two across and three down. I made the borders (except the center border) the same size on all four sides. For the center border in the group of borders I made it six inches on the vertical sides and two inches on the top and bottom. Then, I used the vertical border a focal point with a special pattern for the quilting. I used only hints of that pattern for the top and bottom narrow borders. I am quite happy with it. The finished quilt is 84" X 102". His bed is a full size. I am quilting it on my DSM.

I like my quilts to cover the feet, up to the shoulders. Too short of quilts aren't very practical.

However, I do "Quilt As You Go" (QAUG) so it doesn't matter how big I make my quilts. I usually make Queen sizes.

My method of QAUG is done with sashing. I have watch many videos that do it without sashing, but honestly, they look much harder to do. You have to join the batting in each row first, then fold the fabric and join it -- way too much room for error for me, as I am a new quilter at age 72 and don't have time to learn how to quilt an entire one all at one time.

I make my quilts on a home Pfaff sewing machine in a very small space. I have learned to do some free motion quilting on each square before joining with the sash, by lowering the pressure on the foot, but I leave the feed dogs up because when I put them down my quilt is smashed to tightly against the plate and won't move as easily.

nls 05-03-2016 04:14 AM

I prefer rectangle quilt, but it depends on how ou plan to use it.

Vat 05-03-2016 05:05 AM

Rectangles are my favorite but sometime the patterns will only lend itself to a square. I have done squares but reluctantly.

LGJARN52 05-03-2016 05:06 AM

Rectangle quilts for me also. Baby quilts are square.

Same here. The only square ones I've made are for babies. I figure they'll be rolling around on top of them as often as being covered by them. To me it's more about the recipient's size. I figure wingspan plus a foot, then head to toe plus a foot. That usually satisfies so that no one has to scrimp and wrestle to stay tucked in.

My mind must be out to lunch....I know granny squares from crocheting, but what is a quilt granny square?

ShirlinAZ 05-03-2016 07:52 AM

I like square wall quilts, but rectangle lap and bed quilts. For lap quilts in particular I want them long enough to cover up with on the couch, but if they are too wide they tend to fall off the couch and uncover me or there is just too much bulk at the back of the couch. Just my preference. However, I have put on a few pounds in my later years so I need quilts a little wider than I used to

Feathers-N-Fur 05-03-2016 08:06 AM

I make square or rectangle for baby quilts. Just whatever I want to make at the time. My next size up is twin. I make approximately 60x90 for twin and sofa quilts. Then my DD has a full bed and she likes 90 square. DS has a queen bed and likes 100x100. Then I have a king and make 115x115. I think a wide rectangle would probably fit better, but the square is easy, any side can be the top, and it is easier to layout a square IMHO, and it definitely covers our feet, even my 6'2" DH.

Aurora 05-04-2016 01:48 AM

Since I am only 5' tall, a 66" square quilt is perfect for me. Square quilts are great or couch snuggling.

Conartist1945 05-04-2016 04:47 AM

Always rectangle

BETTY62 05-04-2016 09:27 PM

I make a rectangle quilt if it is to be used on a bed and a square quilt if it is to be used for a baby quilt.

carolynjo 05-07-2016 07:28 AM

I like rectangular quilts as then can better be lengthened. My DGD's boyfriend is over 6' tall and I lengthened the quilt a lot so it could be tucked in. It was a hit.

abc123retired 05-07-2016 07:34 AM

I like square quilts so they can be turned any which way.

Boston1954 05-07-2016 08:10 AM

Something inside me likes rectangles.

Jane Quilter 05-07-2016 08:31 AM

Most of mine are rectangles.....though most of the patterns are for squares......very annoying.

QuiltnLady1 05-10-2016 11:02 AM

I like square quilts for table toppers, rectangles for everything else.
