square quilts

I want to make the north star quilt from MSQC for a chirstmas gift for a male family member. I mentioned this to a quilting friend and she says she never makes square quilts.....he is quite tall and now I am not sure whether I should look for some other pattern I can make longer.....How do you all feel about square quilts?

ekuw 08-01-2018 07:08 AM

Not my favorite. I prefer rectangular. They fits beds & bodies better!

Tartan 08-01-2018 07:25 AM

I only do square quilts for lap size wheel chairs quilts. If a pattern is square, I just do more blocks or borders to make it rectangle.

newbee3 08-01-2018 07:29 AM

you can always add extra borders just to the top and bottom

eparys 08-01-2018 07:45 AM

I too prefer a rectangular quilt. When I want to make a square quilt into a rectangular one I sometimes add some sort of either pieced or solid border top and bottom and then add a narrow border abound the whole thing. If I want to make a square quilt ( 60" square) into a bed size quilt, I have added a wider pieced border on three sides for the drop and then a narrow border around all four sides to finish it off.

I personally like rectangle quilts. I made a square quilt for my son's girlfriend and I didn't like it so added a border at the top and bottom before I took it to my LA quilter and loved it a lot better. I think it is personal choice tho'

ArtsyOne 08-01-2018 08:40 AM

I usually stick to square ones, but my current project needed something "extra" so I've just added an additional row of blocks to the bottom.

I love square quilts! They usually wind up between 60 and 72 inches. For a splash of color, you can put them on a bed, turning them on the diagonal for kings. I've not had any complaints from tall recipients, they can just use them on the diagonal.

cathyvv 08-01-2018 10:12 AM

agree with this 100%.

I generally make rectangular quilts for beds and cribs, but lately I've been making a few large square quilts for throws, think about 70" x70". I like this size for throws. It's big enough that both little daughters and I can curl up under it, and it's a great size for their 'tents'! My DH is six foot and the 70x70 size never seems to bother him at all. Both shapes of quilts have their uses.

I think square quilts are a cop out for the pattern designer. It's easy to be symmetrical in a square, harder to be rectangular and to make adjustments for twin, full, queen and king. After a while, there just aren't enough places in my house to hang a square quilt.

Onebyone 08-01-2018 11:29 AM

Square quilts fit a bed the best. It lays on top with no overhang which is what I like. I don't think I it means more work for designers to make horizonra! quilts. All use a computer program to design.

Jingle 08-01-2018 12:26 PM

I don't make or like square quilts. All rectangle for me.

Prism99 08-01-2018 01:39 PM

I'm satisfied if I just finish a quilt; shape is rarely a factor for me! I like both square and rectangular quilts, as they both are useful. As for making a North Star Quilt for a male, I know that my husband likes geometric shapes and prefers symmetry -- even in quilts -- so that would be a winning design for him.

I looked up the North Star Quilt pattern, and it would certainly be easy to add two extra rows to make it rectangular. However, the square quilt is already 80". Adding two extra rows would make it 80" x 106", which would make it unwieldy. I would stick with the square version of it which does have a pleasing symmetry.

Oh, what a pretty quilt! And the bigger the quilt, the less it matters if it's square. For instance, a king sized quilt is usually a square.

QuiltE 08-01-2018 02:15 PM

Square quilts are probably my most commonly made size, no matter how big/large.

They provide lots of options for their usage.
Unless it is a directional design, it also leaves you with no fears as to which way is up or sideways.

For a bed quilt, a square works best for me, to allow for drop on the sides, and pillow tuck at the top.
For a lap size, it leaves cuddle room, if a 2nd person is with you ... or on point, works for a taller person.

Do what you think works best for you ... and the person you are giving it to.

suern3 08-01-2018 02:23 PM

Looks like a great design and at that size 80x80, square won't be a problem at all.

SusieQOH 08-01-2018 03:00 PM

I don't like square quilts either. But........ you can add borders to the top and bottom.

QuiltingNinaSue 08-01-2018 04:13 PM

Depends on how tall the man is because our son is 6 foot four inches and loves when I make him a quilt that is 112 inches long and 98 inches wide. Extra borders are not that hard to figure out to expand quilts in lengths or width. Since I am retired and he is still working, I expect him to pay the LA fee on the quilt or I don't finish the top and hand it over. Of course there is no charge on fabric or my time making it because it is a gift filled with love. LOL!

Whatever you make will be just right and will be loved, I am sure.

I much prefer square quilts and that's what I make most often. I don't understand the comment that a rectangle fits beds better. Square ones fit my king and queen mattresses. I have footboards, and thick mattresses, so I want a large drop on each side, not as much at top or bottom. It all depends on the bed the quilt will be on, not so much on the size of the person.

sewbizgirl 08-01-2018 04:50 PM

And if it will be used on the ground, like a picnic or baby quilt, it just about needs to be square!

Mkotch 08-02-2018 02:59 AM

Many of my quilts do end up being square. Just finished one that is, and it is beautiful. I just let the design determine the shape so that even though I sometimes set out to make a rectangle, it ends up as square. Doesn't bother me either way.

SusieQOH 08-02-2018 03:35 AM

Dunster is correct about King size beds (I don't have a Queen so I don't know about them)
King beds are almost square- 76x80

ansew 08-02-2018 04:39 AM

As I make mostly quilts for beds(twin through queen), my personal preference are rectangular quilts. I like a pillow tuck and a generous drop so rectangular quilts work better for me. Whenever I find a square quilt pattern that I like, I always figure out a way to make it rectangular. I dislike square quilts that much that I'm willing to put in the extra work to make it rectangular. The quilts that I make(twin/full/queen) are not square and neither is your body. I even make rectangular baby quilts.

Go with what you like best--for me, it's rectangular.

Boston1954 08-02-2018 05:34 AM

Something in me likes rectangles, unless they are wall hangings. Then I do not think about it. I've made both in many sizes, but try to avoid squares most of the time.

AlaskaAlice 08-02-2018 12:58 PM

I prefer rectangle quilts to sq. also. I have two quilts going right now one square and one rectangle, I am planning to add something to the sq. one..but very tempted to leave it square. I have it quilted and could just add the binding but it is for a tall guy so I think Ill add length..the rectangle one was on my quilting frame until I found the backing was shifting..so I had to unsew several rows of quilting..I hate unsewing! but it was necessary so I did it and it is ready to finish quilting and then bind..

Karamarie 08-03-2018 03:44 AM

If I make a square quilt, it is a wall hanging.

Wanabee Quiltin 08-03-2018 05:16 AM

I don’t like square quilts at all. I change patterns to make them rectangular.

Nice Quilt and not a bad size in reality. It will cover a bed with a small amount of side drop. He'll love it no matter how big it is or what the shape, because YOU made it especially for him.

About the shape. Square isn't my favorite as I like rectangular bed quilts. SO I often cut the borders on the Sides about an inch or so less, depending on their width. So if the border is 4" x 54" I cut 3" x 54". That might not seem like much BUT if you do the same to any inner borders on the same sides, you will make it more rectangular. Since this quilt only has the one border all around, it would be a judgement call on your part.

I totally agree with this, I've made square quilts for full, queen, and king beds and they fit just fine! The only rectangular quilts I've made have been for twin beds.

I think it's a bit harsh to insinuate that designers of square quilts are lazy.

Feathers-N-Fur 08-03-2018 08:25 PM

I’ve read these sentiments on here before and don’t understand the hatred of square quilts at all. I make 4 general sizes; baby which can be any size, twin at approximately 60x90, queen at about 98x98 and king at 115x115. I like a good size drop on the sides, it keeps DH from stealing all the blankets.
