Square in a Square block????
Does anyone know the formula (square size vs square to be cut twice for triangles)for this block????

That method makes every edge a bias edge. I make square in a square blocks for the scrappy quilts I make but the triangles are cut once on the diagonal so the bias edge is sewn to the center square. They're a 5 inch square for the center and two 4 inch squares cut in half once on the diagonal for the corner triangles. The squares come out 6 3/4.

If you prefer to make a square in a square this way -- with individual triangles -- try this. You can disregard the first two sentences of the instructions in the first graphic, it was written for corner squares when setting a quilt on point.
Or you could do it the second way by 'snowballing' with squares that are one half the width of a side PLUS .75" (6" block = 3.75" snow ball square). Either technique allows the "float" you need to keep sharp points. Jan in VA |
