Square in a Square help
 

Up early...can't sleep, trying to figure out what to do with so many 2 1/2" squares that I have. I really don't want to have to cut these all down to 2" if it can be avoided. Trying to make a decent square in a square and I have the jest of it. But when I sew two completed blocks together it appears to have too much space between points from one block to the other.
If starting out with a 2 1/2" square, what size block is the next piece before cutting diagonally in 4th? Hope this is clear as mudd as they say, otherwise I need more coffee this morning!

Try a 3-1/4 inch square.

Hi,
When you start out with a 2.5” square, you need two additional 2.5” squares for the outer square. Cut each square once on the diagonal. This yields 4 half square triangles.

sew these 1/2 square triangles onto your square.

when it comes time to trim, you need to trim more than the “rabbit ears” off.
line up your 1/4” line on the point of the inner square, then trim.

It’s important to note that I use half square triangles instead of 1/4 square triangles because I want the edges of the blocks to be straight with the grain. If you use 1/4 square triangles the edges of the block will be on the bias. They could be prone to stretching.
