thats the best way to describe it. is there such a quilt pattern that is not set on point? thanks, susan

Try a square in a square with a hour glass as the alternate block. This gives the illusion of square in a suare in a square set on point.

I think if you don't want a square set on point that you could make the center square the size of your choosing then add strips going around it in the width you want and as many as you want. Example start with a 5" square and add 2 1/2" strips around until you've reached the size you want (of course changing the fabric with each square).

Not on point would be a square with two rows of sashing the same width sewn to the center square. Is that what you mean?

exactly joyce, so i just make it up as i go for the first block. i thought so but thought it might have a name. thought i would do it in black and white fabrics for son. thanks for the help.

Wouldn't your version be a variation of a log cabin block - regardless of the colors chosen for the borders?
