Square in a square
 

Have pulled this top out to see if I can get it finished. I'm not very good at FAQ so can anyone suggest an easy pattern. Thank you for looking.

I think it is so pretty. Where can I find this pattern? Or even just the measurements of the pieces? Thank you for sharing this with us.

How about quilting diagonal lines thru the blocks in both directions. Use a walking foot if you have one. I love the boxed squares pattern. Your colors are wonderful! I'm cutting a Christmas version right now.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]445955[/ATTACH]One of my favourite but easy FMQ pattern us orange peel. I do it by drawing squares with chalk and then stitching between them in a continuous manner. Since you already have the grid (squares) you could use it to do the design. I will post a picture of some placemats I used it on. I drew in one square of the grid but I grid the whole placemat and can sew the whole design without stopping.

I too have been working on two Square in a square tops for charity....... I have never done a scrappy one.......

JuneBillie, all you do is cut 3" stripes at least from my pattern. If you look carefully, you will see that she rotates the blocks so you NEVER match a seam. They don't tell you that in the pattern book.

Your colors are beautifully selected and the quilt is one of my favorites. Any overall design will look great on this top!

I like how yours is scrappy! This pattern was on my 'wish list' too. So a few months back I made one with every other one being white. It was a very light colored quilt. I like the look of yours better. Nice work!

You can always cursive words into your quilt! I've done that on a few quilts so far. Sometimes instead of making a regular label.

Your fabric choice and quilt design are perfect together! Can't help with the FMQ but what ever you pick will be great!

Oh I am liking your quilt! I just tried the orange peel on some 9 patches and it was pretty easy and fun. Most important it looks difficult so non quilters really like it!! :D

That is a very pretty quilt and a neat idea about the quilting as well.

I would suggest some thing with curves feathers

You could also do just straight stitch quilting. About a 1/4" from every other line. Down then across, starting in the center and working out to bottom, then top and out to each side.

I like the idea of the orange peel quilting but if you don't like that you might try concentric squares around the outer part of each square. This would emphasize the squares and you could use a walking foot if you wanted.

Jenny Doan does a tute on a Square in a Square using a Jelly roll, a charm pack and I can't remember what she calls the 1 1/2" strips. I made one and it is so cute. I am planning on making another one. Only bad thing - it was kind of boring. But I guess some quilts are kind of boring when you do the same thing over and over and over.

I'm with Tartan on the orange peel, but because I'm not that great at FMQ I do it using my walking foot. I do a gentle curve from one side of the quilt to the other, first vertically, then horizontally. It's very easy to manipulate your quilt sandwich to make these gentle curves, and because you're using a straight stitch you don't have to worry about the usual issues of stitch length and tension that you would with FMQ. I drew up a set of diagrams for you:

Tartan, how do you do this in a continuous line? Do you move like a snake--weaving back and forth (or up and down), or do you make one hill after another (like in the tutorial that someone posted?) Are you using a free motion foot or are you using your walking foot? I would love to have more details. Thanks! Carolyn

My thoughts exactly tartan. It softens the edges and adds interest to a linear design.

Love your quilt! I second the motion to write in cursive on your quilt. My first quilt was "written" on. You already have the muscle memory for writing and that makes it a wonderful way to get accustomed to fmq and moving the quilt under the hopping foot.

LyndaOH, thanks for the suggestion for making the orange peel. This makes more sense to me than flipping the quilt 3 times for one block.

I also think either diagonal or orange peel. I love the colors.

I love square in a square. I have just finished one, and quilted circles on each block. I am in the process of another one, and on this I am going to quilt squares at random angles in each patchwork square, and probably then quilt a smaller square inside the first one, again at various angles. Does this make sense?
