Squaring a Quilt Block
 

I have read many different ways to square a quilt block. From what I have read it seems to that in order to square a large block (8" or more) I will need to buy a large square measuring tool. I have the 6" one and that works fine for small blocks but can I straighten a large one without getting another tool?. Any suggestions? I really don't want to buy another tool but will if that is the only way.

Go to your local hardware store and ask them to cut you several common size plexiglass squares that match the blocks you mostly make. I have a 12.5, a 10.5, and 8.5. Ask them to be precise in their cutting. Good for square ups and a lot cheaper than the square rulers. :)

I cut a square out of cardboard and use that. It works well enough and it costs nothing!

If you are hooked on quilting, I would suggest buying a 12.5" square when they are on sale. I do a lot of charity quilts and I could NEVER survive without my 8.5" square. I prefer making larger blocks such as with the pattern Warm Wishes.

I would also vote for getting a 12.5"X12.5" square up ruler. Wait until quilt rulers go half off at JoAnn's or use a coupon and get it online. Although you certainly can use a generic square cut from plexiglass or other material, it really is much easier to use if there are ruler markings, especially a true diagonal. With the 12.5" version you can square everything from that size on down. You can also use it for other things, like squaring up fabric before cutting strips. I finally broke down and got the 20.5" one when it was on sale. I started doing 16" blocks and it made my life much easier!
And remember, as you collect rulers, it's wise to get all the same brand as the measurements can vary just a bit.

I've squared up using a smaller ruler and the marks on the cutting board. It's what I used for blocks larger than my largest square ruler.

I use two rulers... works well...

Remember that Walmart may also have the larger ruler to square up a block.

Though I did get mine at JoAnn's with a coupon. I like the diagonal marking for squaring up a block.

While I totally agree with investing in the 12.5" square ruler, keep in mind, that if your block is pieced, you can use your 6" ruler and measure out from the center seam. This keeps your trimming even along all sides of your block and will usually result in matching future seams/blocks that much more accurate.
