Stabilizer Organizer
If you use stabilizer - how do you organize it? I am trying to find something for my new studio.
somewhere on the QB, i had seen that someone use one of those close shoe hangers... the ones with a single vertical panel with loops on each side to put the shoes [stabilizer]
I use a wine rack that sits on a leftover table, but I have seen over the door shoe holders that would work also, like this http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/stor...tegoryId=12213

Wine racks are really wonderful. I have a bar room in this house (but I may be moving soon) .. and after (if) I move, I'm going to look on Craigslist for some sort of wine rack to hold rolls of stabilizer.
mine are all rolled up loosely on their own shelf with a tag(a piece of painter's tape), stating what they are, (fusible or non), brand, etc.
I also keep specialty fabrics like heat resistant, rubberized, etc. on the same shelf. |
I use two wire hangers meant for kitchen foil, wax paper etc. I hung one on either side of my cutting and marking station in my sewing room. Each rack holds up to 4 rolls of something. In my case various stabilizers for both sewing and embroidery. They were probably not more than a couple of dollars apiece either at the dollar general store or Walmart. I used cup hooks that screwed into the wooden dresser that I use as a cutting/marking slash storage area. It was one of those dressers that had legs. I had my husband cut the legs off and that makes it just the right height for rotary cutting .

Mine are in a trunk but I have been looking at yard sales for a wine rake for the last month .
Love the one with a picture frame. Someone was very creative using their peg board.
Here is one i made.
Love the idea of the shoe rack. They have them in WAlmart for $5. Easier for me to hang them on a closet door. Shoe racks I've seen are clear and vertical. Would be easy to read the type of stabilizer. Maybe will get a couple!
That is what I use, and I purchased it at Walmart. I put everything that either comes in a roll or can be rolled up. I haven't learned how to use my embroidery machine yet, so don't have many rolls of stabilizer, but I put my Heat N Bond type fusibles, my fusible applique sheets, the rubber-type shelf liner and rolls of paper in it. I haven't started labeling the pockets, yet, but will eventually get around to it.

I buy the foam swimming noodles at the $ store for $1.00. I then cut to the length that I need for each kind of stabilizer, etc. Secure it with straight pins or rubberbands. I make a label with my labeler and add it to one end, so I know what each one is. Then I can stack them on top of my fabric cabinet or closet shelf. Works for me.

Mine are rolled up, or in sheets. They're in the bottom drawer of an armoire(?sp).

Thank you for all the great ideas! What to do with my stabilizers is a problem I have, also. I definitely need to work on some serious organizing in my sewing room this summer.
Great ideas, I will check into each one. Thanks
Mine is a Round shoe holder that can have added section to, (from Walmart) that have in quilting room on plant hook. I also found some of the "slap braclets " and use them to write the name on and keep them rolled up. I found them at the "Oriental Trading" sales magazine.

PVC pipe works well cut to length and glued together in a triangle to sit on a tabletop. Cardboard paper towel tubes would also work but not as sturdy.
I have some long rolls. I got velcro straps and embroidered the names of the different stabilizers on muslin. I made "tubes" and slip whatever the type is over the adjustable straps. As the roll gets thinner I tighten the strap. I keep them all in a 2 drawer file cabinet. It's deep enough for the long rolls. I'm pretty much out of wall space in my sewing room. As I get and use different stablilizers i make new "tubes" and they're always labeled. (Max in Virginia)

I had some extra foil paper holders that held 5-6 rolls. These are the kind you can attach to the interior side of a cabinet door style. Since I wasn't using them I attached them to a vacant wall I had. Use these only for the rolled stabilizers as I also have some on bolts and very large rolls (50 yd).

stabilizer organizer
I make a bag from the plastic liner of instructions the ones that are rolled with the stabilizer at the store -- then roll the stabilizer and store in the bag. I have a collection of stabilizers and store them in a large vase in my sewing room.
I like this one best for my room.

I've also found that the slim bags newspapers are delivered in are great to protect stabilizers and they type can be labelled on the bag.
Mine are in a drawer and it is a major feat finding the one for the current project. I love all of the suggestions found here and will most definitely work toward creating a neater solution. Very much like the peg board idea as it lends itself to organizing more than just the stabilizers. Thank you one and all.

I attached old shower curtain rods on both sides of my cutting table Tear away on one side, cutaway on the other. It is right there when I need it.
I went to the liquor store and got a couple of wine boxes that had the dividers for the bottles. The rolls fit in the sections and I store the boxes in my cupboard.
In Nancy's Notions catalog they have a "over the door stabilizer organizer". It looks very nice and looks like it holds a lot of rolls. The price is $19.99 it was on page 51 in the spring catalog.
