Which stabilizer to use
 

I am about to start my first appliqued quilt blocks. What stabilizer do you recommend? Is there a stabilizer that you iron to the fabric that is to be appliqued then iron to the background so the appliqued pieced is held firmly in place while you stitch the applique down?

Check out emblibrary.com under projects/kennys corner or do a search on floriani stablizier. They have a whole workbook you can download that tells you everything. You can buy iron on stablizier and you can also use basting spray like 505 or I like the JT in the blue can from Walmarts. Good luck

When I machine applique I usually do raw edge buttonhole using steam-a-seam lite for the applique and coffee filters for the stablizer. The filters are acid free, iron flat, and can be bought at the $ stores.

I recently appliqued on blocks using my embroidery machine. The fabrics used (applique and base fabric) were name-brand Kona cotton solids.

I used a fusible medium cutaway on the fabric being fused, used a fusible medium tearaway on the fabric to which the applique was being applied and floated a medium tearaway under the hoop. It worked very well.

I've done 2 app. quilts using the Eleanor Burns "Applique in a Day" book...where you trace the appliq. parts onto lite weight fusible interfacing. lay onto fabric w/ fabric facing fusible. Stitch around, trim to 1/4 inch all around..slit the interfacing and turn. Finger press the edges and fust the appliq piect to background block. I really enjoyed turning the bits at night and pressing to blocks next day. It was so easy to hand sew the parts onto the blocks since they were fused. This fusing will not endure washing and wear all by itself. The book is Series Six.

I use wonder under or heat and bond lite and fuse to my applique pieces then fuse to the background fabric. You also need to put tear away stabilizer on the back side of your background. It is not fused into place. Then I stitch around my applique pieces using either the blanket stitch or another of my decorative stitches. When finished, tear away the stabilizer from the back.
