I read a post on here about a stain glass quilt and eventually thought up an idea for a wallhanging. Gotta love how my train of thought runs sometimes.
When I read the post about the stain glass my brain kind of clicked in and made me remember something I saw when I first played "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker". When you finally get the Master Sword, if you look around the room where you find it you'll see these beautifulstained glass windows, eight of them. They're just not ordinary stain glass windows---they depict 6 of the 7 the sages from "Ocarina of Time" plus Ganon and the Triforce. Got me all nostolgic when I first saw it. :) Here's a link to some pictures...just scroll down until you reach a little section called "Stain Glass Sages". Well, don't think I could actually make them out of stained glass...never done it and I went to Hobby Lobby once and the supplies for it were expensive. I figure I'm already planning on making the sea map from the game so why not go for the stained glass windows of the sages too? lol. I've read a little about stain glass quilts, but I want to ask you guys who have done stain glass quilts about how I would go about making these images into quilts. I know one problem for me would probably be getting the "leading" widths right...and these stain glass windows have several different widths of leading to them. You guys explain it better than any magazine ever could. And in magazines and such they never tell you about the insanity draining problems you run into. |
From what I've seen on tv, I think the first step is sketching your "window" on freezer paper. One show I saw did it sort of like reverse applique', with the pattern cut out of solid black cloth then the colored fabric was attached under it in the opening. But I don't remember how they did it. You might see if you can find the Simply quilts videos on HGTV.com and see if they have one on file for it. The finished product was really pretty.

If they do have videos for it I wouldn't be able to watch them...my Internet connection is too slow. Took me two and a half hours to download a 10 minute video on screen printing (the actual printing part, not the entire process).
I've seen something like what your talking about in one of my magazines. They cut out turtle shapes and then cut out designs on their shell and then appliqued it onto a background. I guess it kind of has the same idea. |
I kind of remember seeing it done another way---like you cut out the pieces of your design, arrange the pieces onto a background fabric, and use bias strips as the leading. But that was done with an image that didn't previously have that stain glass look. I'm not sure if the technique would work well for a designt that's already spaced by leading.

Flying...I took a look at the stained glass windows that you were talking about and they are beautiful. They would make an awesome quilt. Can't wait to see the designs.
