Standard sizes
 

What are standard sizes for double and queen size quilts? I will be using them in lieu of bedspreads or comforters. Thanks!

Run a search on quilt sizes you will find charts you can print out for your ref. Be sure to take in to account that all matteress are different and it will depend on what drop you want. Hope this helps

This site has some information. There is no one standard size. It's better to figure out what you want in terms of overhang, pillow tuck, etc. and measure your bed to determine the size needed. Even then, you may find that the pattern you want to use will come out a different size, especially after quilting.

I got into one heck of an argument trying to explain that "standard" size no long applies to bed covers. With the great heights of some beds, not to mention how much fall each of us prefers------------there is no set answer.

A twin bed is 39" wide, double 54", queen usually about "60 and king over72". Use that as your starting point. Then decide how much fall is needed for the particular bed in question.

As an extreme example of what GrannieAnnie just said, my mattress and box spring sit directly on the floor with a mattress height of 15 inches; my daughter's antique four-poster has a mattress height of almost 4 feet...same sized mattress. LOL

What I use for quilt measurements sometimes is this:
Baby size quilt- 42" x 52", Square Baby quilt- 36" to 42" usually works, Lap size- 60" x 72", Crib quilt- 45" x 60", Twin size- 63"x 88", Full Size- 78" x 88", Queen size-84" x 92", King size- 100" x 92".If you are making the quilt for a specific bed you definately need to measure for you specific needs....if you want it to wrap the pillows, how much drop you need, etc.

My box springs sits on the floor and I still have to stretch to get into bed. A drop of a good 24" with just the matteress and springs. I can't use bedruffles since the springs are on the floor, so I usually have a nice looking bottom bottom sheet for the springs---------even if I have to make it.

You start with "standard sizes" and work from there according to the newth depth of mattresses.

The length and width are usually standard. I know of no measurement that takes in the height of the mattress.
I just switched from a standard twin to a standard memory foam - there's about a 3 - 5 inch difference in height on the same bed.

One king bed has a sort of pillow top. Nothing fits that right except bottom sheets.
