Just spray basted a 60X60" lap quilt. I HATE crawling around on the floor for a multitude of reasons... sore knees, too clumsy, dog fur (no matter how much I sweep before I start), the dogs automatically think the new quilt is their new napping place... I could go on but you get the picture I am sure!

Tonight I had a flash of brilliance... why not tape the backing to the wall instead of the floor!? I don't have a lot of places in this house where I can do that but I think the laundryroom will do just fine!!

I am trying it in the morning with a tree skirt that I am dreading trying to get it layered and I'll tell you how it goes!

Also, how do you keep it from getting on the floor/wall? I have to put newspapers all around the edges. That stuff isn't easy to get off the floor!!

Here's my report:

Took me 15 minutes to baste this table runner. No pain, no dog hair, no sweating!

Based on previous events, I think it cut the time in half and probably cut the aggravation down to 5% of what it was to do it on the floor.

Looking forward to doing more!

What a wonderful idea!! My question though is how did you keep the spray basting off the wall? I generally use my cutting table to do this and then I have to clean it to get the sticky off -- which is not a bad thing since the table gets a "good" cleaning this way.... :D

I haven't had a problem with overspraying using the 505 spray. I tend to aim inwards as I spray and if there are sections along the outer edge that needs extra spray I pull it back and spray into the quilt.

It is MUCH easier to control the spray when you're standing!!!

My sisters and I each did one during our Sisters' Week. We cut one day and pieced our strata. Then the next day we sewed the bargello. It was fun but it is a one of a kind! Never again!

Is there a husband at your house and if so how did he take to you taping his walls? I love your idea but am scratching my head as to how to make it fly past the husband.

I used the blue painter's tape and since it is only there for short time, he's fine with it!

If it's an issue wait until he's gone to do the first one... believe me it is so quick and easy, he'll never know!

LOL!! I can just see him pulling out of the driveway for a business trip while I stand behind the door with a roll of painters tape and a can of spray baste!

I have carpeting on the floors of my available walls...I think that I will put down a disposable drop cloth/newspaper. I am going to try holding a strip of cardboard along the edge of the quilt... to keep the over spray off of the walls.

My knees and back are already telling me thank you!!! 8) 8) 8)

Great ideas - first to spray into the quilt and second to hold a piece of cardboard at the edge.

I have terrible back pain and pinning or spray basting on the floor puts me in agony for a few days at a time...I can't wait to try this method.

What about fresh air? Do you have windows near where you are spraying? The spray cans that I have used always warn about having good ventilation...

My husband puts saw horses in the garage ( in cold weather) or in the driveway (in nice weather) we cover with plywood and an old sheet over it.

usually a good sized lap quilt will fit....otherwise, between the two of us, we do a portion of the quilt and then move it along the board to finish it.

Goes pretty fast with two sets of hands and there isn't that much clean-up outdoors...pull the sheet off, into the washer and dryer and clean-up is finished.....hubby takes care of the saw horses...etc.......

WOW!!! This works GREAT!!!
I pinned it to the wall in my entryway...I put a fan in the door to suck out the smelly air...
I pinned the backing and then I smoothed the batting on, and then the top... They stayed up there all by themselves :D
Then I placed pins across the center horizontally, I folded down the batting and the top and let them hang. Sprayed the backing, pulled up the batting smoothing it out. Repeated for the top.
I pulled up the top and pinned it to hold it up and out of the way, pulled up the backing pinning it also, sprayed smoothed, sprayed smoothed and I was done!!!
I did put down some newspaper on the floor and used the cardboard for the over spray. It took half the time than when I use the floor and I am happy to say that my back and knees are feeling pretty grateful for this tip!!!
Thankfully I have white walls and I do not mind those small holes or taking a little spackle every few times to fill the holes...much better than putting up with bum knees and a sore back :wink:

One way that you may be able to help with overspray (I can't seem to control mine) would be to tape up a plastic drop cloth over the wall first. They're huge and would protect everything.

Just wanted you to know that I tried this (what a FANTASTIC idea). I velcrod a large rectangle fleece and washable tablecloth on a garage wall, taped my backing on, sprayed....NO PROBLEMS :)...batting, etc. Took me about 15-20 to get it the way I wanted and lo and behold....DONE :). I did put my lap quilt with the top to the left since I'm short and it was easier. I had NO back pain whatsoever :lol: :lol: and am planning on another one tomorrow.....Thanks so much for suggesting this technique.

i absolutely love this idea, you're just so clever. i can't get down on the floor any more due to old age & bad knees so i've been using my bed and that breaks my back. i'm sure gonna try it, but i think i'll try it outside on the side of the house that nobody can see except the neighbor. can't wait to try it.

Do you only use this method to spray baste, or do you also use it when you pin baste? If so, where do you start pinning?

Sounds like you ladies have come up with a winner. I can't use spray basting, I have a bird and they are sensitive to any smells. I clamp mine to a glass topped dining table and pin with safety pins every 3-4" - move it resmooth it and pin untill I get it all pinned, it is slow and takes several hours to do but, it works well for me. Too stiff of joints to do any other way.

I haven't pinned a quilt since discovering 505 spray baste. I even spray my table runners now!

Wow that is a great idea, I am going to try that on my next quilt along with the spray basting the pinning is just not working out that well for me!

As long as you dont have wasp spray your ok lol!

I have had a complete knee replacement, so kneeling isn't my best option any more. I put large plastic on my dining room table and use that. It works for me!

I tape to the wall, and pin starting in the middle, working my way out as I make sure it is smooth.
