Star block with 6.5" center

Hi,

I have a pattern for a basic star block with a 3.5" square (unfinished size).

I bought some Disney Cars fabric to make my grandson a quilt and I can cut 6.5" blocks for the center of star squares, and I realize this would make pretty big stars.

My question is this - does anyone have any idea where to get the pattern for this size of a star, or should I just do the math based on the 3.5" center star block?

Or, as an alternative, would this look stupid as a log cabin block, or perhaps a pineapple? Much easier than a star block but would the large center throw off the overall design?

Your comments are appreciated!

i think a snowball block or a wonky border to the block would look good for a boy's quilt

I'm assuming you mean a sawtooth star. There are several size patterns here, including a 12" finish (6.5" center block):

They would look cool as the center of Log Cabin blocks.

Use coordinating "car" fabric for the logs such as flames, tools, nut & bolts, etc.

I've seen some large star blocks on QB but could not find them when they're most needed so I went to Pinterest and put in big star quilts ..... lots of them appeared ..... maybe one of those will appeal to you. I have that fabric to cut up in 5" squares for an I-Spy quilt but just couldn't do it because it destroyed the beauty of the fabric. Something I might give a try ......

The sawtooth star is so easy and simple to change the size. A focus fabric always looks great in the center.

You can just double the size of your 3.5" block star. It would be 3" finished, and your fabric cut to 6.5" would be 6" finished. Just remember to add in the seam allowance on all sides.
