Superior Threads often has certain colors on sale. Sign up for the newsletter and you can save a good bit of money, shopping the sales. You can also get "sample" spools, inexpensively. It's the same thread but they pick the color for you. It's a great way to try out the different types and I've always received usable colors. :)

I haven't seen Star thread lately. Remember having some that was on wood spools way back when.

My Star threads are on short fat spools with a thick cardboard core.

It might work for decorative quilting, but I think is too heavy for piecing. it would probably throw off your seam allowances
