re starching. I like the results but why do I get a build up on my iron that subsequently comes off on fabric? I use the tube iron cleaner but would prefer to prevent the problem.

I keep used dryer sheets in my sewing room and run the hot iron over one of those to get the gunk off. You may also consider changing your starch to one that does not flake off. Not all starches are created equal.

The starch wipes right off of my iron if I run it over a damp towel. I spray pretty heavy, but let the fabric completely dry before ironing. I didn't notice as much build up on my old iron this way.

How true about not all starches being equal.

Niagara is the best spray starch. It does not flake. It comes in a large spray pump bottle now too.

Not every starch is non-flaking......some will quickly build up on your iron.......I now use only Mary Ellen's Best Press.....would be pricey, but I use the 50% off coupon from my Joann's fliers, and order it from their on-line store.....I can get a gallon for about $24.00......

Mr. Clean magic eraser will get the gunk off your iron, hot or cold! :)
