Barb in Louisiana posted this link https://payhip.com/b/dP0b to this quilt. Can anyone think of a reason that it would be imprudent to make the centers of the big stars as a solid white block? That would save piecing a lot of the white log cabin blocks.

Make one block & see if you like it. When Judy made hers for the book she used a variety of cream fabrics. Using a large white square will give it a different look you might like

I understand your reasoning and often think that, but I am not so sure that the lack of seam lines wouldn't look a bit out of place with all the rest since all of the other blocks will be log cabin mixes. It might break up the flow of the star.

Maybe consider doing it like the purple square inside rather than all white (so not a full log cabin but not a full square either)?

But like the poster above, you could always try one and see what you think!

Use large blocks, then when you quilt it, quilt in the seam lines as though you pieced it! You'll have to make a couple passes and retrace some previously quilted lines, but should be doable. Or just quilt a motif.

I think the beauty of the quilt is in the scrappy mixture of cream fabrics. Having one big white block would not be the same. It would be quicker though, so if that's what you're going after...

I think the seams add interest to the quilt. The directions the seams go in catches the eye and how you see the quilt. You can do what you want as it would give you a large area to show off some lovely quilting!

Thanks for all of the input... I guess the way it is designed is really the best. Anything worth doing is worth doing right?

I would try one and see if I liked how it looked. I am all for putting my own spin on patterns. You could even make a pinwheel block for the center of the star--see--another 'spin' !!

For me it would break up the flow and integrity of the look of the quilt. I have made some of Judy Martin's log cabin patterns and the beauty of them comes from the use of different subtle shades of fabrics which you wouldn't get with a whole piece of fabric. Additionally, the seams add to the texture and beauty of the quilt. Her patterns are not a quick get it done type of process which I like because I enjoy the journey more than getting it done.
