Starting over with quilts for GKids
 

I have 5 grand-kids. Each have their own quilt that I have made. But, now I'm going to start over with their own interests they have developed. Example - Oldest grand-son (13) is into soccer, baseball and basket ball. Any ideas of how to incorporate these sports into a quilt for him. Pictures would sure be appreciated.

Sports fabrics are easily available in stores and on-line. I did Giraffes for my oldest grand daughter, and Cheetahs (harder to find) for the 2nd. Trains for g-son and princesses for youngest. They are now ready for more grown up themes, so I will be starting again soon. I helped make a quilt years ago with an embroidered "A" for Anaheim Angels, and the bottom of the quilt was the field with bases and names embroidered of family members on them. It turned out really cute. The surrounding squares were baseball themed fabric cut into softball shapes.

There are a lot of fabrics out there with baseballs, soccer balls and basketballs. Possibly you could make star blocks or friendship blocks with these fabrics in the center and use or mix them all up. I too have 5 GC and after making baby quilts for them it is time to move on and make more grown up quilts. Good luck and please share pics of your choices.

Along with fabrics with sports prints on them, there are many panels.

A friend made a high school grad quilt for her grandson with a football field panel.
She used were mostly plains and blenders, along with a few prints.
To personalize it, she included his initials, year, football sweater #
along with his high school colours.

D9P is a great generic pattern that makes incorporating interests easy. You may even be able to include all the interests... I usually use the focus fabric(s) for the outer 4 corners, One color for all the centers, and coordinating solids or near solids for the other 4 squares... This allows the 4 corners, which are uncut to shine.
