Found a great way to use up about a yard per bag for a reusable shopping bag. These are intended to be folded and kept in your purse so when you go shopping, you don't have to bring home any more plastic bags! you have your own "Go" bag.
I thought they would make good gifts for my quilter friends, and then got carried away! I think I have made about 30 of them so far, and I haven't noticed my stash getting smaller! They take about half an hour each to make. The hardest part is determining which fabrics to use!

Made some smaller bags for the younger kids in the family!

Cute idea for stash busting. Did you have a pattern or make up your own?

Great bags, thanks for sharing the photos and reminding us all to reduce and reuse.

I love reusable bags, but I have a hard time remembering to take them in the store with me. I keep them in the trunk of my car and can't seem to remember them until I am in the checkout line. Does anyone have a method they use to remind themselves to take the bags into the store?

We keep ours in the back seat where we're more likely to see them. To me, in the trunk would be outta sight, outta mind.

I love your bags!!! I have been trying, (clumsily with a bum hand) to sew grocery totes for gifts for my son and his g/f for christmas. The way that they remember to use them is keeping them next to the back door, (they park out back of their apartment), that way they never forget to grab them on the way out to go shopping. Just thought that I would add my 2 cents in. Thank you for listening.

Your bags are great!! Of course, I especially like the Christmas kitty one :D

Shemjo 12-21-2009 05:41 AM

They were fun. A gal at guild gave a demo last summer and a hand out. I will try to find it, no pictures. The bags are one piece without the handles and lined. Not difficult when you get the hang of it!
Thanks for the comments!

If you dont have enough quilter friends I would be glad to be one! they are great.. love the kitty ones! Where did you get the pattern? (are they flat bottomed). We use them all the time but my kids keep running off with mine.

Yes, they are very clever and I was going to ask the same question.

I found the directions for the bags. This was from a demonstration at our guild last summer.
There are directions to make the bottoms boxy, or leave them and they are envelope style. Hope this helps. Barb did a great job of demonstrating them, so if you have questions, pm me.

I have a big stiff bag from Trader Joes that I have put all the rest of the bags into. That way, I just grab the one big bag and can pick or choose which ones are used. I've kind of collected bags from stores as I shop, but really like yours and plan to make some. I have a folded bag in my purse for those trips when I don't plan to buy!

scrappylouisa 12-22-2009 10:08 AM

I too, have a Trader Joe's bag where I store my coupon binder and shopping bags. It goes to the store with me and I always have my coupons and my shopping bags right there in the cart.

judyjo 12-22-2009 10:59 AM

I keep them on the front seat beside me.

I love your bags. What a great idea. I'm always looking for a way to use up the extra fabric. I would really appreciate it if you could give some basic directions.
Thanks!!

joann hussey 12-22-2009 11:57 AM

I use to leave mine in the trunk also, move them to the back seat so, they are getting closer to going into the store with me!

racnquilter 12-22-2009 12:05 PM

I also keep my bags in another bag in the back seat for my major trips and then I have 2 pink bags that I bought from the grocery store that fold and snap that I try to remember to put in my purse when I go in for just quick trips. The more you leave them in sight and use them, it will eventually become second nature to reach for them when you go to the store.

raspberryparade09 12-22-2009 12:07 PM

I've also found that if I write on the top of my list - "BAGS" it helps me to remember.

Rina 12-23-2009 04:02 AM

Shemjo!! You can't use that lovely material for BAGS!!!! I love the chickens and the Christmas kittens and the cats, and those blue roses and the... LOL!! They are lovely! What must I do to qualify for a friend?

Shemjo 12-23-2009 05:39 AM

Have to confess that some of those bags were made for special people! The chicken fabric wasn't enough, so I had to line that one. It is for a great niece (teenager) who raised a chicken big enough for Thanksgiving dinner for her family-served 10 people!
Have made one from Elvis fabric as well for a cousin who used to impersonate Elvis in talent shows when she was in HS. These are fun!

marytp 12-23-2009 05:52 AM

They are great! Hope you find the pattern! I would like it please send me it when you find it

Shemjo 12-23-2009 06:25 AM

I already attached the directions.
