All of your suggestions show that your have interesting ideas for having quilting fun. I think it is great that there are less expensive alternatives for group sewing. I like all your ideas except for staying up all night. I would last until 8:29, maybe.

This sounds much like my guild's retreat. Ours is $70 but two nights/3 days at a local church camp about 15 minutes from home. We feel like we are far, far away but we are close enough to zip home for that forgotten item. We bring our own potluck evening meals and quilt until we drop then stumble home with finished projects, new friends and memories.

We do this in my group, only we do a whole day, about 4 times a year. We use the community room at the fire station, or sometimes the community room in our PUD building. No fees, bring whatever you want to work on and snacks to share.
We also do our own retreats. We've used retreat centers in the past, but now are at a hotel where we get a great group discount. When we go shop-hopping, if we tell the shops that we're staying at the the hotel they give us a discount. |
Good idea. My guild also goes to a shop. We do call ahead and I have heard the shop employees say how much they appreciate knowing 20+ extra customers will be arriving!

Our small (8) informal quilt group gets together a couple of times a year in a church basement for a sew day. Usually 9:00 to 4:00, a potluck lunch and snacks. Costs nothing and lots of room. A fun day.

My guild is also doing a similar event. We are having our "at home" retreat 9/28 and 9/29. No overnight. Local to all guild members and only $25 per day, come either day or both days. This will be the first "retreat" I have been to and I am looking forward to it.

Sounds like what my local quilt shop does once or twice a year. I don't attend because I'm not a retreat kind of girl, but I drop in to see my friends and meet new ones. They do it on the two days the shop is closed and people set up all over. For a small fee the shop provides some food and people can bring theirs too. Good opportunities everywhere, right?

With retreats getting so expensive, these are great ideas. If anyone has any more ideas of where to have a mini retreat, please let us know.
