Steaming fabric with a dryer setting
Hello,
I just bought a kit for a quilt and of course it states not to pre wash the fabric as some pieces are rather small. I was wondering though if I might be able to put them in a dryer bag and put them in my dryer on the steam setting. My purpose for this is to pre-shrink and fabric before cutting. Do you think it would still ravel and maybe bleed? The fabric is by Jinny Beyer and are batiks. I am not sure batiks shrink much as from what I understand, hot water is used in the dying process, so maybe this isn't even necessary. Any thoughts? Thank You |
I wouldn't. I'd make the top, then wash the whole thing. Never had a problem with shrinking of good quality batiks.

i would use retayne and washin bathroom sink
i had a bleed once after quilting not good i just bout a batik kit from craftsy and this is what i will do Gale |
Batiks don't shrink, but they can bleed. I would swish them in a sink with hot water, then lay the small pieces out to dry on the counter. larger pieces can be dried in the dryer.

forgot to say i roll them wet in a towel and dry iron till dry then startch

I wouldn't worry about shrinkage but I would do the bleed test on each--take a small piece of white paper and rub hard on the fabric. If the paper shows ANY dye then it's washed, otherwise I know I'm good. that being said, I always wash any quilt with a color catcher.

If the kit says not to prewash there is a reason. some may shrink to small to use leaving you short for the product

I attend a Block of the Month class at one of the local quilt shops and the instructor says to spritz the pieces with water and then dry iron them. This works for the shrinkage. However, if the kit specifically says not to prewash, I think I would follow that instruction.
