Is it just me or did JoAnn's just went up on their prices? I went into a Joanns this evening and many bolts of fabric that used to be $7.99 were restickered $9.99. Is this the price increase we were hearing about in recent months? Yikes! I guess I have no choice now but to stick to the moratorium of buying fabric. Hello stash, you are looking so good tonight!

sueisallaboutquilts 02-07-2011 07:01 PM

Yeah, mine has been looking better too! lol

kriscraft99 02-07-2011 07:16 PM

same here only at Hancock Fabrics though :(

koko 02-07-2011 07:18 PM

JoAnn's was purchased by another company in December - I've been waiting to see what changes would be taking place now that it is under new ownership....looks like higher prices no matter how you look at it.

Izaquilter 02-07-2011 07:27 PM

For that price I will buy quilt shop fabric :O(

JEM65 02-07-2011 07:32 PM

I have found the prices have been rising for the last 6 months at my JoAnns here in Atlanta. I even bought some fabric and went back to get more later in the week and they had literally stickered over the price and raised it by $3.00 per yard! They have also been running big half pages ads in their flyers showcasing their Keepsake Calicos as if they are on sale but they are not discounted at all - just regular price. I am finding better sales at my local quilt shops!

I agree. Even with 30% off the Keepsakes, there is no bargain, since you cannot use your coupons. I guess I will be very careful how I spend my fabric dollars.

rexie 02-07-2011 08:07 PM

I don't understand how they can "reprice" the fabric they already have in stock. It has already been paid for at a lower price. It seems to me that the price should only go up on newly ordered fabric.

I don't get it either and really resent places that do this so blatantly. It's a real smack in the face.

from what I understand the cotton crop is an issue and most cotton fabrics will go up $2 or more a yard...glad I am such a fabric hoarder cause I may not be able to afford the latest runs.

I understand that too and I totally get it but.......

why are they raising prices on fabric already in stock? Unless they anticipate a shortage so want to "slow the public down" on their fabric buying??

They do the same for gas at the stations. Not a new load but higher price from one day to the next.

sewwhat85 02-07-2011 09:04 PM

i hope this doesnt get out of hand

bamamama 02-07-2011 09:09 PM

Scrappy quilts are in this year, as least as far as I'm concerned.

crochetetc 02-07-2011 09:11 PM

Was at Joanns today and was also shocked. Their sale price was just a $1 cheaper per yard than LQS. I passed on fabric and will look at Hancocks then LQS for doll clothes material.

The Creative Seamstress 02-07-2011 09:23 PM

Actually the deal you are referencing has been approved by management and their board of directors for acquisition by a private equity firm, but has not yet passed the vote of shareholders. Joann's has until 02/14/2011 to entertain other potential offers from other possible companies and firms willing to make the purchase so that the company gets the biggest bang for the buck and so the shareholders get the largest dividend and/or stock split, all of which they must ultimately vote for and approve (which is obviously likely). As a result, Joann's has not yet officially changed hands and/or management, as that will not occur until later in the year by the late 1st or possibly 2nd quarter if all goes well. The price increases you are seeing for the moment are sticker shocks coming from the beginning of the year balancing, full restocking and a change in some of their vendors pricing for Joann's as a client purchaser, and is not reflectant upon their raising the cost of fabric unilaterally. It's just that many of their outside vendors have raised the wholesale bolt prices which affects everything that isn't labeled as a "Joann's Fabrics" which are the fabrics they have fabricated on their own behalf with there own personal branding which they have cost controlled. Those have stayed the same thus far. Any effects an actual sale may have - remains to be seen. :-D

Explosive blessings, abundance and inspiration to you all!

I agree that scrap quilts will be popular this year!

LovinMySoldier 02-07-2011 09:40 PM

The last 3 fabrics that I bought at Joanns within about a month have all been price marked at one price. And then when they cut it and give me my ticket the price was been between 2-4 dollars more than what the bolt says. I caught it the first time luckily and so I have been checking now to make sure I do indeed get the marked price. They are increasing their prices. :(

Same with Gasoline!!! Whats up with that. They paid for the gas that is already in their holding tanks, but yet they can keep raising the prices almost daily.

That is a 'bait and switch' tactic that might interest your state attorney general.

Noticed same thing at least a yr ago.My LQS has raised prices, but no ways near the amount Joanns has.I have most quilting notions, so that's good & now I'll shop sales only at the LQS.

I went to Walmart last night. I haven't bought fabric there in a long time. A bolt caught my eye. It felt pretty nice. Then I looked at the price. $7.99. Didn't really need, especially for that price.

I agree!

Its called capitalism ladies and gentlemen. It happens everywhere all of the time. Not fun, but there you have it.

I call it "what the market will bear" :) as long as we pay their prices, that's how you make stockholders happy.

I thought it was illegal to chg up a price? I guess that is only groceries...

earlylace 02-08-2011 05:13 AM

glad I haved saved my scraps I think they will come in handy for me.

JuneD 02-08-2011 05:19 AM

I guess the LQS prices are looking a lot better now!!!

ckcowl 02-08-2011 05:38 AM

i visited hobby lobby over the weekend and found the same thing...the fabrics i expected to be in the $7 range were all $9-$10 a yard...i was surprised and dismayed....did not buy any of them. visited Ben Franklin Crafts and they still have plenty to choose from with lower prices, although the new fabrics were higher. good thing i have a decent stash and the availability of the computer to on-line shop...can always find a good sale.

Why would it be illegal? I've never heard of such a thing...(that it is illegal to raise prices). I certainly hope the government isn't telling stores how to price things! Yikes.

Tinabodina 02-08-2011 05:40 AM

Indeed, prices when up every where. Go to your LQS, talk about sticker shock. I sure hope it doesn't drive our LQS out of business.

My husband works at a refinery, so paying a bit more for fabric is "oh well, if you must dear, you must, have fun" For years I've been saying it's cheaper than therapy! And any fabric stored along an outside wall is 'insulation'
