I have been on the side lines reading your posts. You are one great group. I am trying to learn how to machine quilt. The tutorial I read said to set the machine to 6-10 stitches per inch. How do I know what setting that is? I have a Kenmore with more bells and things on it than I will ever use. Thank you in advance.

Stitch a line, measure an inch then count the # of stitches within that inch. If it is 12, then increase your stitch length, if it is 5 then reduce your stitch length. Hope this helps.

I have noticed that most newer machines no longer use this measurement... mine is metric I believe  So I have a cheat sheet that I keep with my machine to remember the conversion

Hm, I don't go by any recommendations - instead, I go by what looks good to me. Trial and error on a practice piece. My problem is that I sometimes forget what settings I chose, so it is important that I write them down until the project is finished.

What I do know is that the regular stitch length in piecing is too tight for me. Usually I sew on setting 2.5 and quilt no less than setting 3.0 - even that might "feel" too tight.
