My DD & DSIL were given a hand pieced quilt when they got married 6 years ago. She just moved in with us for a few weeks before moving down to PA where her hubby has a new job. The quilting stitching has come undone in several places--the thread is loose & broken--and in feeling the quilt, it doesn't feel like there is any batting in it. My question is, how can I "fix" or repair it? I do not have a LA or access to one, so it would have to be done on my DSM, if I could do it. Anything you suggest about the lack of batting?

Don't know if this is a good idea or even a practical one but what about putting a layer of warm and natural and then sewing on a new backing, leaving the old backing in tact and then maybe quilting on the quilt lines that are already there. Sounds like an awful lot of work to me but thought I would throw that out there. Good luck. I'm sure that someone much more experienced with quilting than I will come up with a much better idea.

Can you cut small pieces of batting where it missing and slip it in...and hand stitch it together again?

If the quilt you have does not have batting it is probably not missing. There are some that have been made without and they are called coverlets. These most probably were made to be used during summer months.

As far as repairing, I would try to find similar colored matching thread. It would be best to try to find someone who could make the repairs by hand and not by machine. You might try your local quilting clubs to see if anyone would be willing to take on the project for your.

In the past decade I've repaired 2 quiltd like this for other people.
I spent three nights taking all the stitches out and separating the back from the front (and discarded the lumpy batting on one).
Then I repaired the piecing on the front.
I layered the repaired top, new batting, and backing (one I had to completely replace),
and requilted and rebound them.
Good as new!

Jan, you are something else! I thought that should be done, but didn't think anyone would tackle it. Depends on what the quilt means to you, I guess. Bless your heart!!!

Thanks Ladies for all your ideas. Most likely I will just leave it as it is, like a coverlet as described by milp04, since I have so many other UFOs to get done--including two baby quilts for the upcoming grandchild! I just thought you might have a shortcut idea that would help. It was clearly LA quilted, but have never seen thread shred like this one. She must have used the wrong kind of thread.
