Storage pouch for hot iron
I recently went to a quilt class and when it was time to pack up I had a hot iron. Luckily I was in my husband's truck and was able to put it on a towel in the truck bed and only had a five minute drive home. I did a google search for hot iron storage and only got listings for storage pouches for curling irons, which would not be big enough for my iron. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I used an old ironing board cover and make a pouch to put my hot iron in. Used it for years until it got left at a class. About to make another one! There was a tutorial posted here on this board a year or so ago.
Here is one at sears: http://www.sears.com/whitney-design-...p-SPM222401750 |
Try the mail order outlets like Clotilde or Nancy's Notions (800.833.0690 or nancysnotions.com) I've seen them in the catalogs.

There are some patterns available that you can make. Some even can be used for an ironing pad. Try the site, You Can do this. I don't have link saved.

I bet you could use a silicone baking mat for a 'base' if making your own. I should think it wouldn't ever burn through but would be flexible enough to put a pretty quilted cover over.

Connecting Threads sold a pattern & maybe also a kit to make an ironing caddy. It had heat proof material on the inside with heat proof batting in the middle & a fabric of your choice for the outside fabric. It doubled as an ironing surface & when done, it folded up with handles to hold your hot iron for travel. Maybe if you check with them it may still be available. Basically it was a rectangular shape with the corners cut off & a handle on each of the 2 longer sides & you folded up the ends first, then the sides met in the centre with a hook & eye (or something like that) even some velcro to hold it together & with the 2 handles, you were ready to go. I think someone even had downloaded the pattern here or maybe on youtube. Try Youtube for Ironing Caddy & see if something is there but I definitely remember Connecting Threads having it on their site too & in their catalogue. Looked very simple to make.

Thanks everyone. I never thought to call it a caddy. You have given me some great places to look.

I like that one from Sears linked above. I think the one you make yourself was $15 for the pattern and heatproof fabric and then you still have to make it. the one from Sears is ready to use.

I made a square with heat resistant wadding inside put ribbon ties in the 4corners. The iron will fit inside and ribbons tie to hold in place. When at class the square turns into a pressing mat to use either on the ironing board or on table by side of me. .

There's a pattern for the sole plate of the iron that you can make and there's also a pattern called Iron Caddy (and there's a Jr. size of it).

A lady in my quilt guild made up some travel/ironing mats that are great. You can iron on it; put your hot iron in it when finished and it folds around the iron and buttons into place. Everyone that has seen them wants one. I don't know if there is a pattern for them but you could try a search. Good luck.

Bonnie Hunter posted pictures last week? about a hot iron caddy. I think it was made by Black & Decker and it was a heat proof plastic case with a built in carrying handle. It was pretty spiffy!
|
NOT Black & Decker but the Sunbeam Hot Iron Storage Case. It was posted on www.quiltville.blogspot.com on April 14 and Bonnie found it listed at Amazon for $6.88?

Here is one I made using the smallest the smallest size Nice! I went to a workshop and made one of these. Yours looks nicer! Everyone thinks it's a purse! I found a small galvanized bucket is fast and easy to transport my iron and I don't have to worry about any water leaks. |
