hi everyone, i`m working on a quilt and was thinking about finishing off with a store bought binding tape instead of cutting one up with matching material..do any of you use store bought...would it be cheating??? ty for your input i appreciate...

RkayD 01-20-2011 07:31 AM

the only way I have ever been able to use store bought is if I iron it flat and make it double binding. Otherwise I could never get it straight. There is no cheating as long as what your doing works for you. =)

I haven't tried it on a quilt but have used it on garments and really don't care for the fabric itself and honestly think it would take away from the quilt..remember this is just my opinion, I think it looks cheap( my mom took that shortcut on one, I didn't have the heart to tell her ) and now that I'm a quilter, if I ever have time to make garments again I'll make my own seam bindings too.

I don't think it's cheating, but I agree with kathy. The fabric in the store-bought binding seems to be thin. I don't know if it's a shortcut I'd want to take. Unless there's something out there I'm not aware of besides the bias binding in the little packets.

thanks everyone....think i`ll do it the traditional way...just seemed it would be so much easier...lol but i guesss it would take away from all that work...

Well I am different ,as I have used the store bought double fold binding and loved it

huntannette 01-20-2011 08:36 AM

really? might check them out...lol

I've wondered about store bought also.

EagarBeez 01-20-2011 09:07 AM

I have used store bought and like it

Deborah12687 01-20-2011 09:17 AM

I tried to make my own blanket binding out of statin and also silk and ended up in my scrap bag. It is easyer just to buy the satin binding instead. Saves you time and money.

I think it depends on the quilt. I use it for smaller projects, but never on my bigger quilts. Mostly because I like the softer feel of the fabric and putting it on by hand.

The store-bought stuff, Wrights anyway, is all 55%poly/45%cotton. If you go to the trouble of using 100% cotton fabrics in your quilt, it seems kind of silly to toss on a mostly poly binding just to save some time and pennies. To me, it's kind of like wearing tennis shoes with your prom dress.

this place sells premade bindings, called lollypops

I like to use up leftover fabric when I do a binding, and it really doesn't take much time to make it. But you should do what works for you. I wouldn't ever call it cheating. It's your quilt.

I'm probably really weird because I love to spend hours making binding for all the baby shelter quilts I do.For some reason I find it calming.

Good for you for doing that, because a lot of people hate binding. People who will do that for quilts made by others are always in short supply and are very much appreciated.

I always find it rewarding to bind a quilt because it's the last step. (other than washing and maybe blocking)

I say if you're happy with it, go for it. Theres no cheating in quilting, its your game play it how you like and make up the rules as you go along. You'll find what works for you! I've done the rip and roll binding method on some of my quilts, some would shudder but it works and its alot quicker than all that pressing and folding.

QuiltingGrannie 01-21-2011 03:51 AM

I used it on the first bed quilt I made and my daughter was the one who put in on the quilt. I've not used it since.

I`ve never heard of the rip and roll method...i still haven`t decided what i will do....still putting it together, it`a a scap quilt, that`s why i thought of the store bought tape

wow thank you so much for the link, i put it in fav....

1barron 01-21-2011 05:46 AM

In my case, I make mine simply because I would rather spend the money on more fabric.

pocoellie 01-21-2011 05:49 AM

I don't use it, prefer my binding to match my top or my backing.

jetnica 01-21-2011 06:00 AM

I use the store bought stuff when I use binding, but make a lot of my quilts with the "birthing method" (even a king-sized!!)

I like the way that looks.
