Storing big cones of thread
 

I've looked 'til I'm cross-eyed for something to store my cones of thread to no avail. The only thing I can find are the ones that don't have a cover and the main idea is to have them protected from dust, etc. Does anybody have a solution to my problem? TIA

I store my 1100 meter cones in the larger Art Bin plastic boxes (satchels) with the handles, that you buy from Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft stores.

There are several of the Art Bin satchels that are good. Each satchel has the measurements on the page. For my 5000 meter cones, I could use one of the 6" deep ones, but I havent found them on sale yet. lol

I store the 15,000 cones in WalMart plastic drawer units. The 2 drawer units slide right under my older Nolting 12' frame. The cones do tend to fall over pulling the drawers in & out, but they are out of the dust.

Both Jo-Ann & WalMart have some individual plastic stackable drawers that could be a solution.

I use the WalMart drawer units also. I have a 5 drawer, 4 drawer and a 2 drawer. Works for me

Artbin is the best

the deep art bins that are mentioned can also be found at keepsake quilting along with the cubes for storing these "drawers". both the drawers of this size and the cubes are expensive, though.

I love the Artbin satchels but never buy unless they are 40% to 50% off. The handles & tightly closed lids make them really convenient. They stack remarkably well too, but it is a pain to get the bottom one out if you have more than 4 or 5 stacked. I use them for projects that are kitted & ready to cut, too.

I have a bunch of 5" X 10" plastic bags from when I was selling crafts (you can also use zip lock sandwich bags). I put the large cone in the bag with any bobbins that I've wound. I push the bottom of the bag into the base of the cone to secure. I throw the bag into one of 3 bins, sorted by color: Cools, hots and neutrals. With whatever method I tried in the past, I had a problem with thread tails going everywhere and then how do you keep the bobbins with the right cone? The cones don't stand up in the bins, so I might have to dig around a bit but this method works for me. Keeps the thread clean, bobbins with the correct cone and no thread tangles.

I use the June Tailor thread holder.. they first made the one for regular size thread/spools, but there is one for large cones. I need to get another one as me thread collection is growing almost at the same rate as my stash.
